The AI voice narration is the worst
Reviewed: 04-09-25
Don't waste your time. The narration is terrible when it's not actual human beings doing the voices. Everyone sounds the same, simple words are mispronounced not to mention characters' names.

Yet another amazing season of Emily Lane's adventures and this time there's a bit of "the family that sleuths together, stays together" vibe. Or maybe it's just my wishful thinking. Yes, it's still awesome, engaging, fun, and with more than enough twists to keep you entertained. Yes, the full cast continues to do an incredible job making the characters come to life. Yes, waiting for the next season still sucks. Extra hard. Let the countdown begin.

I thought my troubles would be over once I had my magic and my men by my side. Apparently I was a little too optimistic. My stepmother left me with a seed of doubt I can't shake. I may have more enemies in my home than I ever imagined. My guys say they'll do anything for me, but they couldn't have been prepared for the twisted secrets of the witching world. Or for an old friend to unexpectedly show up in town with who knows what complications for our newfound connection.

Plot gets better. Male narrator gets a -10000
Reviewed: 10-06-24
The plot is marginally better in this one but don't worry -- Tristan James continues to do his best to obliterate your will to live with his spectacularly horrific narration. At best, you will ask the universe to strike you deaf 30% of the way through the book. I'm honest switching to a text to talk service for the remaining books. Yes folks...he's that bad.

Story
For years I've been quiet, obedient Rose Hallowell. I accepted the man my stepmother chose for me. But I never stopped missing my long-ago friends. Now we're back on my childhood estate to arrange my marriage. The boys I grew up with? They're still in town - and they haven't forgotten me either. And damn if they haven't grown up well. They're charming and sweet and infuriatingly hot, and I can't seem to stay away. The more I try to resist, the more secrets I uncover about my family, my betrothal, and everything I thought was true about the witching world. I've been lied to. I've been betrayed.

Worst. Narrator. Ever
Reviewed: 10-06-24
The plot is average at best. There are many other reverse harem series that are better written but honestly it won't matter to you. Nothing will because Tristan James will literally demolish your will to live with his lackluster narration. Whoever told this guy he should narrate ANYTHING ever should go back and tell Mr. James that they lied. I cannot put into words how absolutely HORRIBLE his narration is.

OMG such an improvement on the previous narrator whose nasal, overly breathy voice is so off putting that I actually avoid any and all audiobooks she narrates.

It's just book after book of unhinged male lead characters who pretty much assault their chosen mates from the moment they meet them and bully/groom them into having sex with them and completing a so-called mate bond. At no point do any of these books introduce a male lead that doesn't immediately start physically assaulting the female lead within 2 pages of meeting her. I'm just going to try to pretend that Nalini Singh didn't write this dumpster fire of a series.

Initial thoughts -- frustrating? hot mess?
Reviewed: 05-07-24
Book 1: Lexi - TSTL in the extreme. So disappointing.
Lexi's mom - also TSTL
The main phrase used in this book is some version of "talk later" -- let's talk later, we'll talk later, I'll tell you later. Talk about insanely frustrating. Why does everyone talk about world building in this book? The rules of this world are doled out piecemeal and it really makes that part of the plot a hot mess.
Also, who in their right mind, when confronted by a drunk, violent, threatening man who has broken into your home and has already sexually assaulted you once, thinks to themselves "I'm not sure of his intentions." Are you kidding me right now???? If I could use stronger language than TSTL I would. I don't know that I can continue past book 1 if this is her normal writing style.

I barely got through this book and not definitely not continuing with this series. It's so poorly written...all of the chosen, long-lost royalty tropes with boring, rehashed characters. The mates aren't really fleshed out, fully realized characters and the FMC is largely forgettable. The writing itself is juvenile and amateurish while attempting to deal with childhood abuse and similar issues. The narration is some of the worst I've ever heard. Stephanie Rose manages to sound like a bizarre automaton for most of the novel. Please do yourself a favor and skip this whole series.
