Modern Twists on Old Tropes
Reviewed: 01-29-25
Alice Feeney nailed this one. The drama starts rough, confusing and sets you on an audio ride. Just when you think you have it figured, you’re flipped upside down. Heavily inspired by “The Wicker Man” or “Midsommar,” but not cheesy or over the top with female empowerment (or violence) but enough to give the story grounding and meaning. The character development is incredible. “Abby” is dynamic and interesting to learn. The “whodunnit” trope is fun with only a limited amount of characters living in a confined area. Changing perspectives added so many luscious layers to the plot and maintained the anticipation in a slow grind. The dénouement had a nice build-up, was unexpected and satisfying.
The Audible performances and production are spectacular. They made the book an experience. 2025 listens are starting strong!

It's Christmas Eve at the Merry Monarch. Nestled amongst the Yorkshire Dales, the pub is preparing to host its annual festive games night for its rabble of regulars. But this year, they are interrupted by a knock at the door from a stranger, stranded by the snow storm that's closing in on the village. And this won't be the only surprise of the night. When the power is cut off and darkness descends, the games turn deadly . . . It seems one of the group would kill to win.

Tana French does it again! If you loved the Searcher, The Hunter will not disappoint. The characters in this novel are so refreshing and the development of Tre was rich with depth. I love the Cal Hooper series!

Story
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

I really enjoyed this listen. Production was phenomenal and January really captured Lucy and the inner dialogue with Savvy. I’m still left with questions, but I personally enjoy an open ended resolution. The dark humor made the story! Lucy is an awesome protagonist!

Great Holiday Thriller
Reviewed: 12-20-23
I was looking for a “Christmas Thriller” to listen to and enjoy with my sister while we wrapped presents and prepared for our holiday. This was the perfect book! I enjoyed the narration and the overall performance of the audible very much! Great listen! I enjoyed the main character and the plot, but if you’re a thriller/suspense reader, you’ll probably find this novel predictable. I thought the character development of the antagonist could’ve been deeper. The end felt very rushed. I’d have loved to have gotten to know the “family” more so when the climax and conclusion made its way, the impact would’ve been there. Because this is more of a fictional biography and letter than a traditional story, so much is left out. Like the facts you need to tell a child and you’ll tell them the rest of the story “when [they’re] older.” Unfortunately, because the relationship the reader develops with the peripheral characters is so topical, the end twist lacks the “punch” I was hoping for. Still a fun short listen and would recommend to the novice readers, especially during the holiday season.

Enjoyable story. Lots of twists. Solid character development of the protagonist. If you watched the 2023 AHS season, the show is a play on the book, not the exact manuscript. You can read and watch, and enjoy both separately. Really really enjoyed the plot. Very fun for spooky season
