Story
Two years into World War II, Britain is feeling her losses: The Nazis have won battles, the Blitz has destroyed cities, and U-boats have cut off the supply of food. In an effort to help housewives with food rationing, a BBC radio program called The Kitchen Front is holding a cooking contest - and the grand prize is a job as the program’s first-ever female co-host. For four very different women, winning the competition would present a crucial chance to change their lives.

Great WWII historical fiction

This book is a very good representation of how hard it was for families to keep food on their tables during times of ration in WWII. It’s also a very good story on forgiveness and how people from different backgrounds can try to understand each other better. This is an especially good book if you have an interest in cooking!

Story
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Excellent WWII historical fiction

This book is on my list of favorites very close to Dear Mrs. Bird. It is realistic without being too harsh in its details so that I could even share it with my Mom, who lived through WWII as a child.

Story
"Marley was dead to begin with...." These chillingly familiar words begin the classic Christmas tale of remorse and redemption in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Now R. William Bennett rewinds the story and focuses the spotlight on Scrooge’s miserly business partner, Jacob T. Marley, who was allowed to return as a ghost to warn Scrooge away from his ill-fated path. Why was Marley allowed to return? And why hadn’t he been given the same chance as Ebenezer Scrooge? Or had he?

Could easily be a Dickens story!

I adore “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens and bought this book in hopes it might be half as good. It is not only as good as its predecessor but actually fills in a few of the gaps all while staying true to the original story. It is a fantastic story as well as an awesome performance by the reader and I will either listen to or read the printed copy (which I will order immediately) every Christmas season!

Story
This is Jim Dale's incomparable telling of the beloved A Christmas Carol, a "little book," as Charles Dickens himself called it, which has been treasured by generations since December of 1843. Listeners of all ages will be enthralled as they meet for the first time, or are reunited with, that miser of all misers, Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge.

Wonderful story, wonderful performance!

This is such a great and meaningful story made all the better by the reader, Jim Dale (who is also amazing in the Harry Potter Audible series!). It is a story for all ages and, if everyone wrote as beautifully as Charles Dickens, all books would be a joy to read!

This book is such a wonderful journey back into a history that I never knew existed! It is sweet and carefully written and transports the reader from beginning to end. It is funny and also sad, and extremely inspiring. There are very few curse words and the material is explained in such a way that teens can enjoy it without it being offensive. I absolutely loved the reader also. When the story is sad she brings you to tears with the emotion in her voice and she changes her voice very well for male and female characters. This was such a great book! I will be buying it in hardback form also to share with my mom and sisters who don’t have Audible. Thank you AJ Pearce for the best book I’ve read in a very very long time!

A different kind of Sophie Kinsella

This is different from Sophie Kinsella’s other books but in a good way! I love her other books but this one had a much deeper story and slightly older characters. It made you think...which I just love!
