Story
Utopia Avenue is the strangest British band you’ve never heard of. Emerging from London’s psychedelic scene in 1967, Utopia Avenue released only two LPs during its brief, blazing journey from the clubs of Soho and drafty ballrooms to Top of the Pops and the cusp of chart success, and on to glory in Amsterdam, prison in Rome, and a fateful American fortnight in the autumn of 1968. David Mitchell’s captivating new novel tells the unexpurgated story of Utopia Avenue. Can we change the world in turbulent times, or does the world change us?

unbearable narrator
Reviewed: 03-08-25
I'm a big fan of David Mitchell's but the narrators delivery is beyond unbearable. I have to abandon this now and maybe read the book at some point. It is incomprehensible to me how one can let the narrator take center stage and very much ruin this work with his staccato delivery and unchecked impulse to turn every other character into the same cranky geezer. Prefer fingernails on a chalkboard…

Cliché-ridden, shallow and contrived

as the story progressed along the well-trodden path of a conspiratorial terror plot, I increasingly became suspicious that his may well be the first book I read that was generated by a bot. Disappointed.

Story
The setting is the Georgia wilderness, where the state's most remote white-water river awaits. In the thundering froth of that river, in its echoing stone canyons, four men on a canoe trip discover a freedom and exhilaration beyond compare. And then, in a moment of horror, the adventure turns into a struggle for survival as one man becomes a human hunter who is offered his own harrowing deliverance.

Outstanding audiobook

This is a real classic. Have seen the movie at least twice, which is terrific. But this audiobook expands significantly on the intensity and suspense. Amazingly well written and read!
