Story
A young father with a rare form of lung cancer who has been turned down for a transplant by several hospitals. A kid considered not “smart enough” to be worthy of a transplant. A young mother dying on the waiting list in front of her two small children. A father losing his oldest daughter after a transplant goes awry. The nights waiting for donor lungs to become available, understanding that someone needed to die so that another patient could live. These are some of the stories in this memoir about Dr. Weill’s 10 years spent directing the lung transplant program at Stanford.

Story
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

A perfect selection of stories, from the transcription of a memory that recalls the lives of those you have been fortunate enough to help in their last great journey. Everything does happen for a reason, almost every night of my career i am reminded of this same fact and have re-iterated it for years. Thank you for this addition to our profession!

Story
Standing in the trauma room of an emergency department is like standing at ground zero of a nuclear reaction, only it's not radiation that is released - but stories. Stories that are told and retold, sometimes just until the end of the shift, but sometimes for decades.

From the view of a person from the ICU

Since my two months of nursing torture in the ER I have had a deep respect for people of the ER. My tribe is in the ICU which has our own version of synesthesia, I am grateful that someone has been able to shed some light on the essence of the ER tribe. #TraumaBondingisReal
