Without giving anything away, I believe this was a Max Rupert story we needed! I finished this book with my questions answered and completely satisfied. That is all I will say, but if you are a fan of this series, you must read this one! Great stuff and I have become a huge fan of the author.

I listen to a lot of books on here, most of them in this genre and with the volume I read it sometimes seems like the stories run together. Not this story. It was refreshing and has everything readers of this genre would want in a story. Perfect narration choice as well. I can’t recommend enough and am thoroughly disappointed that I have to move on to another story.

What a wonderful story! David Hyde Pierce did a fantastic job of the narration (no surprise there!). I can’t wait until my son is a little older so he can enjoy this story as well. It is a definite must read and I believe listening here in audible may be the best way to read it!

Joe Hempel is quickly becoming one of my favorite narrators and he was the perfect pick for this great story. The story is cruel, startling, and well paced - traits that fit us disturbed Horror readers well. After this story, I look forward to checking out what other stories Nick Roberts has to offer!

Story
When Alan Hammerstun inherits a quaint ranch house in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, he and his wife Heather seize the opportunity to leave New York and the haunting aftermath of two miscarriages. Eager to start over in the rural North Carolina town, they hope this new beginning will be the antidote to Heather's severe depression. For a time everything seems perfect. Too perfect, in fact.

Good story, bad choice in narrator.

Recently discovered this author and have not been disappointed yet! I feel the only thing holding this back is the narrator. The narrator has a great voice, but it does not fit this story at all. The discrepancy in the narrator and the main character’s age is too jarring.

Story
A psychopath is terrorizing Copenhagen. His calling card is a “chestnut man” - a handmade doll made of matchsticks and two chestnuts - which he leaves at each bloody crime scene. Examining the dolls, forensics makes a shocking discovery - a fingerprint belonging to a young girl, a government minister’s daughter who had been kidnapped and murdered a year ago. A tragic coincidence - or something more twisted? To save innocent lives, a pair of detectives must put aside their differences to piece together the Chestnut Man’s gruesome clues.

An extremely well crafted story with an incredible performance by the narrator. The pacing is perfect, which is in my opinion one of, if not the most important quality in a mystery.

Story
John Connolly takes battered ex-cop Charlie Parker on his third outing after Every Dead Thing and Dark Hollow. Still struggling with the horrific ghosts of his past, Parker is now a disillusioned private eye hired to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Grace Peltier - which neither her father nor a former US senator believes was suicide. The trail leads to a mass grave in Northern Maine where a Baptist community disappeared 40 years earlier.

Wrong Narrator Choice
Reviewed: 05-23-19
I normally think it is unfair to review a book before completing it, but I am going to make an exception for this one. I can already tell the story is going to be as good as the other Charlie Parker stories, my problem is with the narrator. I don't think the narrator is bad at his job, but I am having a hard time picturing the same Charlie Parker as the one Jeff Harding portrayed. His voice and delivery makes him seem like an eager, sarcastic 20-something, which Charlie Parker is not... I would recommend listening to a sample of this before purchasing as it is rather distracting. I would like to stress again that the narrator is not bad, but would be more suited for voicing Spiderman or a puppy in a Disney animated movie. I will edit this review when I finish the book should my opinion change, but I don't have high hopes.

What’s in a label? Are we the product of our upbringing or do we have a natural propensity towards good or evil? The eternal question of nature vs nurture is at the centre of Dr Diane Buckley’s world. A talented freelance forensic psychologist who has never quite found the key to engaging with people on a casual level, she is drafted in to examine a grisly murder – a body found in a children’s playground.

Different and Interesting!
Reviewed: 02-20-19
I loved this Audible Original. I am seeing a lot of complaints about sounds effects, but I think they add to the experience and I look forward to more Originals that include them. I think if you are confused by the sounds footsteps or knocking on doors and have to rewind, you have bigger problems... My only complaint is the long music and intro/re-intro break to remind us of the title and author at the conclusion of every part, it seemed to make the story less fluid (and the only reason I am giving 4/5 overall). This story is less than 5 hours (short by my audible standards), but the author was able to give depth to all of the characters (with help from the talented voice actors who bring them to life) within that short amount of time which impressed me the most. Love them or hate them, the characters' downfalls and motivations and even histories in some cases were clearly laid out in a way that flowed with the story. Nothing was forced, nothing was rushed. We were given a short story made long by the combined talent of an author, who I will be checking out when I finish writing this, and a variety of voice actors. If you are a fan of a good mystery, I highly recommend this Audible Original.
