Interrupting Footnotes!!
Reviewed: 06-08-22
If I could give this 0 stars, I would. The constant interruption of the story by the reading of footnotes was intolerable and after 5 chapters I had to call it quits!

Story
When a dead man is lifted from the freezing waters of Oslo Harbour just before Christmas, Detective Lena Stigersand's stressful life suddenly becomes even more complicated. Not only is she dealing with a cancer scare, a stalker and an untrustworthy boyfriend, but it seems both a politician and Norway's security services might be involved in the murder. With her trusted colleagues, Gunnarstranda and Frølich, at her side, Lena digs deep into the case and finds that it not only goes to the heart of the Norwegian establishment, but it might be rather too close to her personal life for comfort.

Convoluted Back Story
Reviewed: 08-24-21
This was a frustrating listen! I listen to a lot of Nordic Noir, but really struggled with the names and characters in this story. The plot/back story was so convoluted and only revealed in fragments that it was not compelling. Not sure why I finished the whole book.

This book gripped me from the first chapter and would not let go even after the recording ended. The characters were very real, and while complex, the story line was clear and compelling. A great listen!

Did Not Enjoy, Could Not Finish!

The story was plodding from the beginning, but I kept listening, hoping it would get better. By the end of Chapter 12, I could no longer rationalize continuing with this book. The narrator at least had an interesting accent and dramatized the characters. Problem as, I did not give a whit for a single character or what they were doing.

Story
How does a child become a criminal? How does a father lose a son? An epic crime novel with the excitement of Jo Nesbo's Headhunters and the narrative depth of We Need to Talk About Kevin, The Father is inspired by the extraordinary true story of three brothers who committed 10 audacious bank robberies in Sweden over the course of just two years. None had committed a crime before. All were under 24 years old. When their incredible spree had come to an end, all of them would be changed forever as individuals and as a family.

Twisting suspense

I loved this book! There were a few times I was sure about what would happen next, and it still pulled me along. The turning point at the middle was completely astonishing. Can’t wait to start the next in the series!
