Annoyingly weak characters

I wanted to love these characters, who were introduced in the prior book and seemed like awesome people. The story starts out all right, but as it progresses, the MMC Heath comes across as selfish and weak. Stella, the FMC has been in love with Heath her entire life. We are meant to use this to excuse her acceptance of his dismissive treatment of her and their relationship. I kept wanting to tell her to have some pride and tell him to get lost until he starts acting like an actual adult! I was also annoyed how she continuously victim blames herself for an incident in college, and about how much of a jerk her supposedly great and fun loving brother is. On the plus side, it was a relatively short book so the annoyance wasn’t very long lived. I will not be reading the next book.

Sweet story with surprising introspection

This could have been just a cute romance about a painfully shy high school English teacher who falls through a worm hole into the future, and her gym teacher colleague, who is the only person she can talk to on the phone from the future (they had me at worm hole romance). However, while not taking itself too seriously, this production tackles issues like facing your fears, the significance and surprising intersection between poetry and sports, and standing up for what you believe. While not science fiction exactly, it has enough elements to really make it different from most romance stories, even time travel romance. GREAT acting/narration. Loved it.

Scarlett is the daughter of the founder of a “Big Law” firm in Chicago. Having just graduated law school, she is excited to join her dad’s firm, but is disgruntled by the all business, no-BS attitude of one of the senior partners, Hudson, whom she has been warned is ruthless. At first, Scarlett comes across as whiny and self absorbed- the prototypical millennial wanting a medal for showing up to work, and assuming everyone should be her best friend without her doing anything to deserve it. We never see any evidence of Hudson being cruel or ruthless; he just scowls a lot. I almost stopped listening bc Scarlett was so annoying. But, as their chemistry heats up the story gets better and Scarlett gets more likable. Overall a decent listen if you can make it through the first 1/3 of the book.

Some of the story was great, but Sloan just too annoying

The FMC, Sloan really got annoying at times. She has supposedly wanted a husband and kids her entire life, but has inexplicably waited until she is 38 to even consider looking for a partner bc she was too focused on her career as a head librarian. As she doesn’t seem to work more than 40 hours a week I had trouble accepting this premise. As MMC, Lucian is great. Lots of fun tension between these two. However, Sloane’s philosophy seems to be that if bad guys get her, she’ll just annoy them to death with her inane but plucky attitude and chatter. If she finds herself in a dangerous situation, she’ll just take the most foolish action possible until someone rescues her. This book, like the first two in the series, was just too long, so the story gets old before you are done. A decent read/listen, but could have benefited from editing of length and Sloan’s annoying personality.

This is a continuation of book 1, ending with quite a bit unresolved. The female main character continues to be strong and badass, but also kind. She’s got a strong moral compass and doesn’t like anyone taking away her choices, but she’s extremely loyal to her Chosen. Great world building, lots of questions left at the end. Looking forward to book 3!

Witty, Over The Top, Meta Fun

This book is lots of fun, with elements of the ridiculous:
✅ mistaken author identities
✅ over the top villain
✅ incredibly efficient AI hotel concierge who may or may not be sentient, have a romantic heart, and a brutal sense of irony
✅ story within a story with behind the scenes look at romance writers at a convention and the books they are writing

It also has two absolutely lovable main characters dealing with issues like anxiety, finding their voice, making personal connections, and being true to themselves in the face of criticism from family, friends, publishers, and fans. The writing and dialogue are clever, the plot is engaging, and you really root for the main characters. This is a very entertaining listen - highly recommend.

Witty dialogue, chuckle-inducing phrases and quotes, read by the author. But this isn’t just a funny book - it’s also a touching account of working through grief, what it means to be family, being gay in America, and what’s important in life. Highly recommend - I love this book.

Overall good, but at times had a little too much angst for me. I liked the FMC but the MMC was kind of a jerk through much of the book and didn’t show much character growth. Yes he has his reasons but get over it and move on like an adult!

Beautifully performed, nice character development. Our Hero is kind of a jerk at times, so I wish our Heroine didn’t forgive him so quickly. However, overall a very good listen.
