Story
On the surface, young Charles had it all: high-society parents, a place at an exclusive New York City prep school, summer vacations in the Adirondacks. But the scrawny teenager suffered from extreme anxiety thanks to a sadistic father who mired the family in bankruptcy and scandal before abandoning Charles and his mother altogether. Charles’s only source of joy was swimming. But with no one to teach him, he struggled with technique—until he caught the eye of two immigrant coaches.

Like that race and privilege were presented and discussed but not drowned in hatred. Hoped Bakari Sellers was a better narrator.

Story
In Everthing Is F*cked, Mark Manson turns his gaze from the inevitable flaws within each individual self to the endless calamities taking place in the world around us. Drawing from the pool of psychological research on these topics, as well as the timeless wisdom of philosophers such as Plato, Nietzsche, and Tom Waits, he dissects religion and politics and the uncomfortable ways they have come to resemble one another. He looks at our relationships with money, entertainment, and the internet, and how too much of a good thing can psychologically eat us alive.

Good but not what I expected
Reviewed: 07-24-24
The content and narration were both very good but I was expecting more of a self-help focus like the last book. This one is darker and less uplifting but still has worthwhile insights along with the sometimes disturbing elements. I still highly recommend it but just be prepared.

Really enjoyed this cautionary tale of humans, relationships and love and how some knowledge is better left unknown. The tale is actually many tales woven together to illustrate the unintended consequences of the population receiving a gift of knowledge. The multiple performers were excellent and greatly enhanced the experience.

The sudden availability of lifespan information would be expected to cause turmoil and fear and many predictable issues arise although some twists and surprises also pop up.
The story was okay and entertaining while the narration was superb. Found myself unable to get deeply invested in the characters but still a worthwhile listen.

Story
In this extraordinary work, Beth Macy takes us into the epicenter of a national drama that has unfolded over two decades. From the labs and marketing departments of big pharma to local doctor's offices; wealthy suburbs to distressed small communities in Central Appalachia; from distant cities to once-idyllic farm towns; the spread of opioid addiction follows a tortuous trajectory that illustrates how this crisis has persisted for so long and become so firmly entrenched.

Addiction in Stark Reality
Reviewed: 04-29-24
The naked reality of the latest opioid addiction epidemic was laid bare through telling the stories of the actual people involved. And the truth is brutal.
The profit over lives motivation of Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family, the coercion then participation of the health care system, the willing experimentation then powerless need of the victims, the devastated families, the unresponsive governmental and medical communities, the ignorance and stigma, the perseverance under near hopeless circumstances. And it continues.
In depth, personal and educational, this journalistic work reveals and enlightens.

After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.
