Story
The fourth and final year of the Civil War offers one of that era’s most compelling narratives, defining the nation and one of history’s great turning points. Now, S.C. Gwynne’s Hymns of the Republic addresses the time Ulysses S. Grant arrives to take command of all Union armies in March 1864 to the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox a year later. He breathes new life into the epic battle between Lee and Grant; the advent of 180,000 black soldiers in the Union army; Sherman’s March to the Sea; the rise of Clara Barton; and much more.

Like a pamphlet more than a book

Civil War lite. Skimming over so much. Lots of inaccuracies. Focuses solely on negative Union outcomes. Barely touches on confederate outcomes, generals, etc. If you want to know a tiny bit about the Civil War and don’t care how accurate or precise the information is, listen to this. If you really want to learn I’d recommend the three part Civil War narrative by Shelby Foote.

Story
General Sherman's 1864 burning of Atlanta solidified his legacy as a ruthless leader. Yet Sherman proved far more complex than his legendary military tactics reveal. James Lee McDonough offers fresh insight into a man tormented by the fear that history would pass him by, who was plagued by personal debts, and who lived much of his life separated from his family.

I’m endlessly fascinated by the Civil War and in particular with Sherman. I found this biography well done- very interesting and comprehensive. I loved everything about it except for the narrator. Something about his reading style sounds synthetic- almost like AI. I’m glad I didn’t let that prevent me from listening because it’s a great book, but the narrator voice was kind of odd.

Goering, Goebbels, Himmler, Heydrich, Hess, Bormann - names synonymous with power and influence in the Third Reich. Perhaps less familiar are Carin, Emmy, Magda, Margarete, Lina, Ilse, and Gerda. These are the women behind the infamous men - complex individuals with distinctive personalities who were captivated by Hitler and whose everyday lives were governed by Nazi ideology. Throughout the rise and fall of Nazism these women loved and lost, raised families, and quarreled with their husbands and each other, all the while jostling for position with the Fuhrer himself.

I really enjoyed this. The vast majority of WWII and Third Reich history focuses on the male figures involved, so I found it fascinating to see the women "behind the scenes" if you will. I devoured this in about 3 days. I couldn't stop listening!

Story
Hitler’s Forgotten Children is both a harrowing personal memoir and a devastating investigation into the awful crimes and monstrous scope of the Lebensborn program in World War 2. Created by Heinrich Himmler, the Lebensborn program abducted as many as half a million children from across Europe. Through a process called Germanization, they were to become the next generation of the Aryan master race in the second phase of the Final Solution.

7 hours to get to the point
Reviewed: 04-11-24
The story here was interesting, but it could have been covered in about 30 minutes. The rest of the time the author threw in copious amounts history that I already knew. If you don't know ANYTHING about WWII or the Third Reich and this is the first book you've ever picked up about the topic, this could be informative. For me it was just regurgitating historical facts that have already been covered in every book or documentary about the topic already- and it's not as though I'm some major WWII buff. It's basic history. Including that much political detail seemed like filler to make the book longer. There was less about her own personal story, and what she shared could have been summed up in about 4 chapters.

Story
Kensington Palace is now most famous as the former home of Diana, Princess of Wales, but the palace's glory days came between 1714 and 1760, during the reigns of George I and II. In the eighteenth century, this palace was a world of skulduggery, intrigue, politicking, etiquette, wigs, and beauty spots, where fans whistled open like switchblades and unusual people were kept as curiosities.

Annoying narrator
Reviewed: 04-11-24
I love Lucy Worsley and I've enjoyed her other books but I found this tedious to get through. Part of it may be the narrator, who did silly accents depending on the person. Cartoonish German accents, a butchered American accent, lame attempts at a lower register to represent male or more stern voices. It was unnecessary and, to me, annoying. Just read the book in your normal voice, it's not a puppet show.

Ian Mortimer shows us that the past is not just something to be studied; it is also something to be lived. He sets out to explain what life was like in the most immediate way, through taking you to the Middle Ages. The result is the most astonishing social history book you are ever likely to read: evolutionary in its concept, informative and entertaining in its detail.

A few basic, obvious makeup techniques sprinkled amongst hype for the author’s brand. I’d be much more inclined to check out the brand if it wasn’t being shoved in my face during what I thought was going to be a helpful how-to. No thanks.
