My Heart and Imagination were Invested
Reviewed: 02-28-24
I enjoyed this book a great deal. As the story weaved its path toward the river, the authors, descriptive words and the beautiful narration helped my mind create the pictures I needed to see behind my eyelids. At one point I imagined my own beautiful Black sons being taken from me and I had to take a break… the resilience of black motherhood is far too much to capture, however the author did a very nice job. I look forward to reading more from this writer.

Story
We should have known the end was near. So begins Imbolo Mbue’s powerful second novel, How Beautiful We Were. Set in the fictional African village of Kosawa, it tells of a people living in fear amid environmental degradation wrought by an American oil company. Pipeline spills have rendered farmlands infertile. Children are dying from drinking toxic water. Promises of cleanup and financial reparations to the villagers are made - and ignored. The country’s government, led by a brazen dictator, exists to serve its own interests.

Beautiful Narration
Reviewed: 02-28-24
The narration of the story was so beautiful and kind to the listener. And The overall story was very good. The descriptions helped my mind, see what I think the author imagined as the book was written. I enjoyed aspects of each character, except the villains, of course. However, it could have been the intent of the author, or maybe something else, but I felt that I had too many unanswered questions left at the end of the book. I felt “incomplete” when the story was over, but not disappointed. I
look forward to reading more books by this author.

His advice works. And he supplies the reasons why his advice works. He also has a YouTube channel you can follow.
I don’t like some the voice of the narrator when he asks the questions, but that’s personal preference.

I grew up like this...
Reviewed: 09-17-20
I grew up Pentecostal. In ways, I can tell Yaa Gyasi did her research... or grew up Pentecostal. This is a good listen.
4 stars for this reason: The storyteller does get “preachy.” It seems a he uses the Main character, Gifty, as a way to tell the world all of her personal feelings. When Gifty would go into these drawn out explanations of her thoughts concerning God or how the reader should feel about a social topic, I felt it was a kind of an indoctrination.
I would suggest this book.

You will want to slip your earbuds in, get as close to naked as is comfortable, and stroll through your garden singing, reminiscing, and listen to Common tell his story.
So yeah, I loved this live performance. The Music is fantastic and the lyrics are on multiple points. I appreciate how he honors his father, black love, and his journey.

Story
Why exactly Charley Bordelon's late father left her eight hundred sprawling acres of sugarcane land in rural Louisiana is as mysterious as it was generous. Recognizing this as a chance to start over, Charley and her 11-year-old daughter, Micah, say good-bye to Los Angeles. They arrive just in time for growing season but no amount of planning can prepare Charley for a Louisiana that's mired in the past: as her judgmental but big-hearted grandmother tells her, cane farming is always going to be a white man's business.

Perspective is Everything
Reviewed: 01-22-20
This story is told from the perspective of the adopted/foster children. I enjoyed it for the most part. At times the story was a little stereotypical. The author seemed to want to address some components of how race effects adoption, however these notions seemed not to be developed enough. This book is worth the read and the performance is easy to listen to, even when the female voice portrays male character voices.

This is an excellent read, and I am here for all of it! Thank you for this collection of essays that gives words and context to many social nuances that have perplexed me. I had many “ah ha’s” while listening to the book.
The audio is clear and well presented.
My only complaint is that the essays are so intricate and thought- provoking that I wanted more and was sad that my book had come to an end.
