So slow - couldn't finish it
Reviewed: 10-22-24
I couldn't finish this book. Even tried to change the speed of the reader. The story dragged on and the character development was well, very juvenile. I really wanted to like this book based on other reviews and genre but couldn't get there.

Story
Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and to devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must make her way in a court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

I feel bad leaving not great reviews because it must be so hard to write a book... but I found the main character in this book so blah... as well as the story. The narrator was also very monotone - had to push through to complete it. Agree with another review -very little plot

Whereas we can only guess at the true nature of historical figures, it was a shame that Isabella was portrayed as a whiney, lovesick girl but perhaps for our time she was but not for her time. This was a struggle to get through and I was easily distracted while listening. Glad it was short.

The narrator Rosalyn Landor is as usual amazing and greatly talented. The story was too wordy and at times seemed to rely more on the description of the nature around the scene taking place and metaphors then actual character development. It was only my true stubbornness that kept me going -talk about perseverance.

Here, she hopes that the wild beauty will inspire her to produce her best art and will give her the baby they have longed for.
