Story
The name “Hollywood” conjures up fantastical images of bright lights, glamorous dreams, and impossible riches. From its humble beginnings as a ranch sprawling northwest of Los Angeles in the late 1800s, Hollywood has spanned lifetimes as a factory of dreams, a dazzling place where all things are possible.

This was an excellent performance of some tired old stories. Nothing seems to have been added through research to the folklore of some of the more commonly told American movie business stories. Maybe there's nothing left to tell twenty some odd years into the 21st century that hasn't been told a thousand times before. If that's the case a talented author might consider moving in new directions.

At age 95 Mel Brooks tells the story of his rise from Borscht Belt keeper of the sour cream to one of the world's most well known entertainers, film makers, writers, composers, and producers. If you like even one of his films, TV shows, or Broadway plays (and if you don't, what's wrong with you?) you'll love Mel's great autobiography.

This is one of the great sci-fi classics of the latter half of the 20th century. It could, indeed, be the greatest sci-fi classic of the latter half of the 20th century. I think we can all agree, however, that it is mostly harmless. Mostly.

Story
Enchanting, tragic, and hilarious fairytales for adults and children grace this audio. An initial glance might lead you to assume that these are satirical versions of classic Christmas ghost stories. However, beneath the humorous stories involving ghosts, repentant sinners, miracles, and good peasants who find well-deserved happiness, lies a psychological undercurrent that sharpens the sense of intrigue and plot movement. Often this is aided by the unrelenting social exposure of the authors who always understood how intangible the bourgeois paradise truly was.

These are the stories that defy conventional logic. The proverbial vanished without a trace incidences, which happen a lot more (and a lot closer to your backyard) than almost anyone thinks. These are the missing whose situations are the hardest on loved ones left behind. The cases that are an embarrassment for park superintendents, rangers, and law enforcement charged with Search & Rescue.

A Review

There is much in this book that is worthwhile. It is often interesting, frustrating, or heartbreaking. I don't think that the author was championing the causes of bigfoot or alien conspiracy theorists, but I do tend to enjoy the science a lot more than the pseudoscience. Mainly, this book tells about the gut-wrenching experience of having a loved one go missing in a large, unfamiliar, dangerous place.

Story
What is animal welfare? This concise and accessible guide is for anyone who is interested in animals and who has wondered how we can assess their welfare scientifically. It defines animal welfare as "health and animals having what they want", a definition that can be easily understood by scientists and non-scientists alike, expresses in simple words what underlies many existing definitions, and shows what evidence we need to collect to improve animal welfare in practice. Above all, it puts the animal's own point of view at the heart of an assessment of its welfare.

Every living thing on this planet has developed a time-tested arsenal of weapons and defenses. Some of these weapons and defenses, however, are decidedly more unusual than others.

The narrator was great, but the writing was rather poor. I normally like this kind of thing but was disappointed. I realize that most of the stories are very old and worn. Why write a new book that just beats any number of dead horses?
