Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes educational! I enjoyed learning about his life in South Africa and especially learning more about his relationship with his mom. A lot of her lessons to Trevor and his thoughts on race, class, and just being a human being really resonated with me as well. It’s also a quick read!

The book itself is unlike anything I’ve ever read and is not something I thought I would enjoy as much as I did. Rather than rely on exposition so the reader has a full understanding of the lore in the story, Tamsyn Muir allows us to learn about the world organically as the story progresses. Gideon the Ninth is as funny as it is dark, and Moira Quirk’s performance really brought the story to life. I’m looking forward to more!

A Twist on Persian Mythology

I ran into this book recommended on TikTok as an LGBTQ read. What I found was some of that and more! As someone with Persian roots, I was delighted to hear characters with names I recognized as well as cultural things I recognized!

The lore and mythology in this book is inspired by actual Persian and Middle Eastern mythology, but with a twist. The demons were interesting, and I loved Parvaneh as a character. Soraya’s struggle was compelling and her feelings were complicated and real. I fully expected the point of the story to be breaking Soraya’s curse, but she struggled and ultimately found the beauty in her curse.

Basically, Girl, Serpent, Thorn is truly unlike any book I’ve ever read, and I felt represented reading it.
