Enjoyable, gritty end of the world survival
Reviewed: 03-28-25
Fully enjoyable story and narration, measured solely on the fact that I was anxious to get back to it at every free moment. The characters are flawed, gritty, real - they are likeable and funny, even in the face of the end of the world. I found that the story flowed well between the characters, their interactions and the dangers faced at every turn. Survival during the apocalypse might make the strongest succumb to the bottle, throw in a couple of kids and you might just have a reason to keep going. The only aspect that I felt needed more work was the cult's drive to find just one person. Hopefully this is cleared up in one of the following books.

Story
In the wake of the apocalypse, Flora has come of age in a highly gendered post-plague society where females have become a precious, coveted, hunted, and endangered commodity. But Flora does not participate in the economy that trades in bodies. An anathema in a world that prizes procreation above all else, she is an outsider everywhere she goes, including the thriving all-female city of Shy. Now navigating a blighted landscape, Flora, her friends, and a sullen young slave she adopts as her own child leave their oppressive pasts behind to find their place in the world.

Good conclusion
Reviewed: 03-14-25
I found this to be a good conclusion to the end of the series. Again I was more captivated by Book 1 in the series than the subsequent books - with book 3 closely relating a memoir, with an interesting focus on self acceptation and self love. The underlying messages are very unique and beautiful, though the book is still rife with enough danger and action related to living in the world after the collapse.

Good addition to series

This was a journey of self discovery set in a world of pain and fear. It was also captivating and a good addition to the series, with a heightened focus on the world that developed after the chaos in Book 1. I did find that the first book in the series was more gripping than Book 2.

Desert is consuming the North American continent, Europe was wiped out by a cataclysmic meteor shower, and the world's oceans are unsalvageable poison. Those who could afford to flee to space are long gone, leaving the rest behind in the dust. Nyx is completely alone, scavenging the ruins of humanity to get by. With her brother suddenly missing, the only people she can trust are herself and her busted-up Bronco. Scavenging earns her enough water credits to stay alive but with no margin for error. When a stroke of unexpected luck sends her back to the nearest tent city, things go sideways.

Enjoyed this book a lot! It was captivating with well-rounded characters and crazy situations, action and danger. The dusty dessert and endless search for water already makes the story gritty and captivating. Then throw in gangs and impossible missions and you have a hard time disconnecting from this book. Hopefully Book 2 is just as good!
And top notch narration as always from Glemboski.

The chaotic and terrifying onset of the end of the world is wrought with fear as our Midwife struggles to make sense of a world where women are now scarce and men will do anything to gain control over the ever shrinking female population. Well written and with top-notch narration.

Intriguiging and complex plot
Reviewed: 01-15-25
A plot interwoven with a complex ensemble cast that spans over timelines and locations, both across Earth and Mars. Its an intriguing puzzle pulling on notions of conspiracy theories and mysterious occurrences and unearthly beings. The narration was engaging, though occasional minor audio quality issues were noted (possible overuse of sound effects). While I enjoyed the whole story and the complexities of the plot, I was underwhelmed with the ending. It felt like there was no clear, definitive conclusion.

Story
Cal's "honeymoon" didn't start off quite how he'd planned. For starters, he was heading somewhere he didn't actually want to go. And secondly, he was going alone and unmarried. He had no idea that his first visit to New York City would also land him in the middle of a domestic terror attack, forcing him to flee Manhattan in a desperate bid to survive. This was no ordinary terror attack. The Movement, in a misguided attempt to seize political control of the USA, unwittingly invited the destruction of their homeland.

Riveting fall into chaos
Reviewed: 01-06-25
The premise of an entire nation descending into chaos certainly evokes a morbid fascination, akin to that unsettling feeling as you drive by a horrific car crash. The intricate plot unfolds with a good deal of detail, making the "how" and "who" clear from early on. The characters are vivid, one of Devon's best skills, definitely drawing me in to want to check out the subsequent books in the series, to see if the other authors are on par.

Heath Holiday. My crush on him has ebbed and flowed over the years, but the day I started working for his construction company was the day I smothered it for good. Sort of. Mostly. It was on my to-do list. Making it a priority would have been easier had he not arrived at his family’s annual Christmas party looking ridiculously handsome in a suit. Then he kissed me. We stepped into an alternate universe and he kissed me.
