Story
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

Insightful

I loved this book from beginning to end, including the author’s note. This book dealt with some challenging subject matter in a meaningful way without leaving me feeling utterly bereft. The characters are imperfect, it doesn’t end completely tied in a neat bow. This is actually one of the positives because it allows room for further contemplation. Beautiful story telling.

Cozy Mystery

I was really missing the Low Country Liz Talbot series by Susan Boyle and stumbled upon this book. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Not a literary masterpiece but it you’re in the mood for a southern cozy mystery, this hits the spot with quirky characters, a sense of community, and great food descriptions.

This was a sweet, easy story with engaging characters. Great beach read without being total fluff. I’ll definitely read more from this author.

Southern belle BeBe Loudermilk has lost all her worldly possessions, thanks to a brief but disastrous relationship with the gorgeous Reddy, an "investment counselor" who turns out to be a con man. All that's left is a ramshackle 1950s motel on Tybee Island, an eccentric beach town that calls itself a drinking village with a fishing problem.

Narrator is painful

Really enjoyed the first book and was looking forward to a story about Bebe. Story wise it has an interesting beginning but despite paying for the audio, I may wait to read the book because the narrator sounds so whiny for the main characters and makes the men sound like cartoons.

Less engaging characters than Mary Kay Andrews other books. Because of the short nature, some of the story didn’t flow
