Story
“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

Another “Can’t put it down” novel from the King

I never miss a book and this did not disappoint! Fantastic read, and so pleasantly surprising to hear more from past characters & scenes! This is my favorite author - but honestly it stood alone very well with plenty of story within, even if you aren’t keen on the back stories. Highly recommend!

Story
Andy McGee and Vicky Tomlinson participated in a drug experiment run by a veiled government agency known as The Shop. One year later, they marry. Two years later, their little girl, Charlie, sets her teddy bear on fire by simply staring at it. Now that Charlie is eight, she doesn't start fires anymore. Her parents have taught her to control her pyrokinesis, the ability to set anything - toys, clothes, even people - aflame. But The Shop knows about and wants this pigtailed "ultimate weapon".

Superb storytelling. Fantastic characters you can sink you’re teeth into. I love all Kings books but this one is so good and so ahead of it’s time when it came out originally.

I can’t believe I waited all these years to read this one. I saw the movie a long time ago and I thought I wouldn’t enjoy this book. I should have known better! It’s everything I love about his writing and I’m sure I’ll read it again. Outstanding story proving again why he is the master storyteller.

Story
Alden McCausland and his mother are what they call “accident rich”; thanks to an unexpected life-insurance policy payout and a winning Big Maine Millions scratcher, Alden and his Ma are able to spend their summers down by Lake Abenaki, idly drinking their days away in a three-room cabin with an old dock and a lick of a beach. Across the lake, they can see what “real rich” looks like: the Massimo family’s Twelve Pines Camp, the big white mansion with guest house and tennis court that Alden’s Ma says is paid for by “ill-gotten gains” courtesy of Massimo Construction.

Great story, I laughed out loud many times. Superb narration - really enjoyed this one. Anybody that has competitive neighbors will feel right at home with this story. I could picture this happening where I live

Story
Dion Fuller sheltered a US marine who'd stolen night vision goggles, and perhaps a few top-secret files, from a nearby military base. Dion found himself arrested (under the ostensible auspices of The Patriot Act) for conspiring with international terrorists to smuggle top-secret military equipment out of Camp Pendleton. The fact that Dion had absolutely nothing to do with international terrorists, smuggling, top-secret military equipment, or Camp Pendleton didn't seem to bother the military.

Enjoyed the voice and character of the narrator. Fast paced story kept my attention throughout. Interesting and there is a lot of references to other writings and authors I hadn’t been aware of - first book I’ve read by this author however I will definitely explore other titles.
