Honest, Compassionate and Inspiring
Reviewed: 07-09-19
I haven't always been a Chelsea Handler fan, but her loathing of Trump, and her honest appraisal of the health impact that comes with it, got me on board with this book.
I'm so glad I got it! She shows so much humility and courage. In a time of her life when she could just phone it in, like so many celebrities do, she decided to do the work it took to become a better person and help make a better world.
Every chapter had something to contribute to the listener on their journey. She is also entertaining, of course, but this is so much more than that.
I count myself as a fan now! I catch her TV appearances whenever I can, and I will be getting other books of hers as well.

Story
As Dave Barry turns 70 - not happily - he realizes that his dog, Lucy, is dealing with old age far better than he is. She has more friends, fewer worries, and way more fun. So Dave decides to figure out how Lucy manages to stay so happy, to see if he can make his own life happier by doing the things she does (except for drinking from the toilet). He reconnects with old friends and tries to make new ones - turns out to be a struggle, because Lucy likes people a lot more than he does.

Dave Barry is amazing

I have been a Dave Barry fan for a long, long time. This is now my favorite of his books because, besides the humor that you can expect from him, he shows great compassion & wisdom writing about his life experiences growing older.
I'm a nurse, and the section at the end where he talks about his daughter's illness & recovery is one of the best tributes to nursing that I've ever read.

I was interested and excited to get this book, but I have to say for me it was a letdown. The interesting parts are her stories about her clients, and following them is what has kept me going this far.
What's not interesting is her own drama. She shows little insight or gratitude for what has been a life of great opportunities and good luck. She is so used to having things go well for her that a breakup with her fiancee puts her over the edge and into therapy. I was with her & sympathetic for a while, but I kept waiting for her to get over it, and herself, count her blessings and move on. I'm 3/4 through the book and I don't think that's going to happen.

Not what I expected, in a really good way
Reviewed: 07-09-19
I'm not a "murderino", or even remotely interested in crime discussions. I've worked as a prison nurse for most of my career, I've worked in person with so many criminals that it just isn't a fun topic for me in my off work time.
That said, I adored this book and the authors. It isn't really about the crimes, it's about Karen & Georgia and their stories. They show so much humor, courage, compassion & depth of understanding in basic life situations. Their friendship comes across perfectly and, like with many other books, the audio of them telling the stories really enhances the experience.
I will read anything else that they come up with, and I will listen to this again. I also sent it to my daughter who loves crime stuff.

Story
Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. Based on 12 years of pioneering research, Dr. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage. Brown explains how vulnerability is both the core of difficult emotions like fear, grief, and disappointment, and the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, empathy, innovation, and creativity.

I actually wasn't a fan of Brene Brown. I had read one of her earlier books and it didn't resonate with me. I could understand why she was so popular, but I just figured she wasn't my style.
I heard about "Daring Greatly" from another resource and decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did! It is just what I wanted and needed to hear at this point in my life and career. I learned a lot due to Ms. Brown's POV as a researcher, and even when she presented ideas I've heard of before, she made them accessible & fresh.

A wonderful surprise

I wasn't expecting to find so much depth & wisdom in a book that I knew would be funny. The laughs are there, for sure! But Cathy Guisewite is a gifted essayist as well as humorist. She speaks perfectly for my generation about having kids and also worrying about your parents. I was an older single mommy myself, I adopted a 7 year old daughter who is now in college. I never thought I would have my experiences reflected back to me so lovingly and clearly.
I think the audiobook is perfect, too, because her mom speaks many of her own lines.

life changing
Reviewed: 03-24-19
It would not be too dramatic to say that Ms. Applewhite changed my life. I realized that the biggest offender of ageism in my life was ME. I was making my life smaller and less significant just because of the number on my birthday cake. I was consciously and deliberately plotting out my "old age" and is wasn't pretty.
I was making plans to retire from the best job I've ever had, just because I decided it was time, despite tremendous positive feedback from my bosses & coworkers.
Now I'm planning for at least another 6 years and couldn't be happier!
I have everything right now that I ever wanted in my life. "This Chair Rocks" opened my eyes that this is just the beginning of the best part of my life, not the beginning of the end.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
