The narrator was okay overall. And, I enjoyed the twists of the story. I could’ve stood a few more details to develop the overall plot. And, I could do with much less use of f@!*. It doesn’t add anything and for me, is a detractor.

Story
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Not a huge fan

There was too much coarse language for me. I couldn’t figure out why the narrator was whispering to me. And, so many things I didn’t need, i.e. the numbers from the tattoo - I didn’t need those read to me over and over - it only distracted.

Not one of my favorites
Reviewed: 04-22-23
I’ll not listen to another Patricia Cornwell book. The foul language is uncalled for. While I mostly enjoy the narrator, I hated Benton’s voice. And, I could constantly hear low talking in the background- that was so distracting. I wasn’t impressed with the story or how it ended. Honestly, I was just glad to be finished. It was just a disappointment.

If I’m listening to a book - I expect a story. I don’t like to be tricked so I’ll pay for the next book. More of this and I’ll just cancel. Also - the language isn’t necessary. I can understand a scenario without so much foul language.

Maybe not what I had expected and likely wouldn’t have even started it if I had known what it was about. But now- I’m all in. I can’t wait to read the next book!! I would’ve liked to have a female voice for the females - the silliness of the reader trying to sound feminine brought me out of my reverie. But that’s a small thing. All in all - I loved it!
