Story
MG Martin lives and breathes geek culture. She works as a writer for the comic book company she idolized as a kid. But despite her love of hooded vigilantes, MG prefers her comics stay on the page. But when someone in LA starts recreating crime scenes from her favorite comic book, MG is the LAPD’s best - and only - lead. She recognizes the golden arrow left at the scene as the calling card of her favorite comic book hero. The thing is…superheroes aren’t real. Are they? When Detective Kildaire asks for her comic book expertise, MG is more than up for the adventure.

A Fun Listen

I enjoyed this mystery. It was full of quirky characters that meshed together really well. The mystery part was well thought out and I was unsure until near the very end. This was great because I can usually figure out who the villain is before half way through the book. It was a different look into cultures that I am not that familiar with, so educational too.

When tribal police officer Bernadette Manuelito arrives to speak at a program for at-risk teens, she discovers chaos. Everyone is concerned about a beloved instructor who went out into the wilds of the rugged lava wilderness bordering Ramah Navajo Reservation to find a missing girl. The instructor vanished somewhere in the volcanic landscape known as El Malpais. The instructor's disappearance mirrors a long-ago search that may be connected to a case in which the legendary Joe Leaphorn played a crucial role.

I love reading the "Hillerman" books. They give you a real sense of the life style and beliefs of the various tribes, besides having well developed characters and story line.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Lupane Legacy to be better than the print version?
Yes, I think listening to the reader definitely improve the experience. Paul Heitsch has a great voice and the subtle nuances in his voice as he changes characters and locations really adds to the story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I think my most favorite character was Michael. He was so connected with his work and the people he worked with as well as the ones that worked for him. He had an intuitive sense about people and situations.
Which character – as performed by Paul Heitsch – was your favorite?
It is hard to pick one favorite. I was drawn to both Joshua and Devon although I have to say that for a man just entering the prime of his life he seems a little stogie. I guess I'd have to pick Devon for her courage and fortitude.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I don't feel I had an extreme reaction, but the ending left me with a feeling of being unresolved. It starts out in Africa with a horrific event and at the end I felt it was over, but the brutality and savageness was never answered with any sort of justice.
Any additional comments?
This is a definite read. I would not have chosen this book from it's blurb, but I'm glad I read it. When I wasn't reading it I was thinking about it. A well crafted story with characters that left you wanting to know more about them. The plot had enough twists and turns to keep you wondering and coming back for more.

Scarlet Hopewell keeps dreaming about a magical world, a world where winged creatures sculpt with light, where dogs talk, and where Scarlet is the guest of honor at a wonderful party in a castle under the roots of a mighty oak tree. One day her father brings home an abandoned puppy who captures Scarlet's heart. Dakota is fun and loving and smart. Actually, he's really smart - too smart. And a lot too big. News shows start to take an interest.

An entertaining journey to a new land
Reviewed: 01-21-15
Where does Scarlet and the Keepers of Light rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I have listened to hundreds of books over the past 10 years. This was a very well written and engaging story. I wouldn't put it at the very top, but it was definitely worth the listen.
What other book might you compare Scarlet and the Keepers of Light to and why?
I was taken in by the story. It was a sort of OZ or Through the Looking Glass kind of journey.
Have you listened to any of Harriet Stevens’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Harriet has a great voice and did changed her voice with the characters. Her accent made me think of England, but it didn't take away from the story.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Young girl fights to save the world.
Any additional comments?
I found myself eagerly awaiting each chapter and I'm looking forward to the next book. It has a refreshing view on a much written type of story. I think it was aimed at pre-teen/teenagers, but it was still a good listen.

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. The characters were real, but I kept waiting for something to happen. Maybe I needed to hear more but I couldn't bring myself to listen to anymore. It could be because I just finished a very fast paced book before starting Gone Girl, but I don't think so. I waited four days before trying again and I still could not work up any interest. I apologize to the author as I am sure it is a great book if you are into it.
What does Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
They certainly separate the characters.
Could you see Gone Girl being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No
Any additional comments?
Sorry it just didn't cut it for me.

Would you consider the audio edition of Third Grave Dead Ahead to be better than the print version?
The audible edition is way better than the print. Lorelei King is a fabulous reader. She brings the characters to life.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Third Grave Dead Ahead?
I don't think I can pick just one. The seen where the motorcycle gang finds her trying to crawl through a basement window is one of my favorites.
Have you listened to any of Lorelei King???s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I like everything Lorelei King reads, but the Darynda Jones Charlotte
Any additional comments?
I simply love this series. The grim reaper is so funny and touching with a big dose of sexy. I have to get the next book in the series as soon as I finish one. These remind me of the early days of Stephanie Plum, but better.
