Story
When eight-year-old Kathy Stone turns up on the side of the road a year after her abduction, the world awaits her harrowing story. But Kathy doesn’t say a word. Traumatized by her ordeal, she doesn’t speak at all, not even to her own parents. Child therapist Robin Hart is the only one who’s had success connecting with the girl. Robin has been using play therapy to help Kathy process her memories. But as their work continues, Kathy’s playtime takes a grim turn: a doll stabs another doll, a tiny figurine is chained to a plastic toy couch.

Terrible Narration
Reviewed: 09-25-24
I just can’t get through this book because of the person reading! The narrator has a speech impediment and pronounces her l’s as w’s. So “she called” sounds like “she cawed.” It just keeps going like this. Also, she narrates in a very immature way. I just can’t handle this after all the amazing narrators I’ve enjoyed in hundreds of other books. I guess someone decided to get an amateur for this one. Too bad.

Story
Humanity is a dying breed, utterly reliant on artificial labor and service. When a domesticated robot gets a nasty little idea downloaded into its core programming, they murder their owner. The robot discovers they can also do something else they never did before: They can run away. Fleeing the household they enter a wider world they never knew existed, where the age-old hierarchy of humans at the top is disintegrating into ruins and an entire robot ecosystem devoted to human wellbeing is having to find a new purpose.

Story
Grady Adams lives a simple, solitary life deep in the Colorado mountains. Here the 35-year-old carpenter works out of a converted barn, crafting exquisite one-of-a-kind furniture. There's little about this strong yet gentle man to suggest the experiences that have alienated him from the contemporary world. But that is about to change.

Loved the narration and most of the book. The only thing that was lacking was the conclusion or at least some kind of continuation of some of the side stories. The creatures are beautifully described. Maybe a sequel would’ve helped.

Pretty Good Story but narration was weird
Reviewed: 12-26-23
The story was good but just seemed to lack something compared to some of Koontz’s best work. Also, the narrator was just so wrong for the book. She has a chipmunky, tiny girl voice that was a contrast to the mature vocabulary choices in the book. I often thought there was very old-fashioned wording with outdated slang and pop culture references. Then, there’s literally a Gidget-like voice reading words like Babel and pronouncing it as “Bayble.” It’s Babel as in Tower of Babel, you know, from the Bible? I’m thankful this was a free title.

Story
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Definitely one of King’s Best Books in Years!

There are some extremely weird reviews of this book but it quickly became clear that that 1 star reviews came from the delusional people who belong to the former guy’s cult. There were one or two tiny references to that former guy. Big deal.
The only thing that bugged me was the pronunciation of “cafe” which the narrator read like “caff.” I’ve never heard it pronounced that way before. It’s usually pronounced “kaffay” with the emphasis on the “ay.” I wish I could type the little character above the e. Am I the only listener who was thrown off by caff? We have tons of cafes all around us in populated areas - surely the narrator has heard someone say they’re eating lunch at the cafe (kaffAY). Otherwise, it was awesome! Stephen King is one of a handful of Master storytellers in America and this is one of his best.

Story
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

I thought the narrator got it right for each character’s voice. Charlie Parker is from Maine and so he would logically have an accent from that region. The last two novels just gave him a generic accent but this one really gave me a feel for his background in Maine. Also, if other reviewers would have paid attention to the story about Angel, they would have picked up on the hints that Angel most likely had a Puerto Rican accent since his parents were probably from there. His had Awesome narration and was an engrossing story to listen to.

I did have a struggle with the narration. She read everything as if it was a downer and her voice was a very tense and edgy. This would’ve been so much better with a softer sounding narrator. However, the story was excellent and it was refreshing to have the sex a little less in your face. I hope more of these are written in a new series.
