I am a sucker for pining, especially when it's mutual. They are equally excited to get married and very unsuccessfully trying to seem like it's whatever while also attempting to seduce the other one into falling in love. What's not to like?

Story
Luc O'Donnell is tangentially - and reluctantly - famous. His rock-star parents split when he was young, and the father he's never met spent the next 20 years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad's making a comeback, Luc's back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything. To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice normal relationship...and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He's a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and someone who has never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. He’s perfect boyfriend material.

it hit the tropes I was looking for and gave me a really good story to boot.
The only mistake I made listening to this book was to pick it as a road trip listen, because the trip ended before the book did and I had to wait months to finish it.

Story
Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv, the orc barbarian, cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city's ever seen. However, her dreams of a fresh start pulling shots instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners, and a different kind of resolve.

Story
Captain Nathan J. Northland had no idea what to expect when he returned home to Lorehaven injured from war, but it certainly wasn't to find himself posted on an island full of vampires. An island whose local vampire dandy lord causes Nathan to feel strange things he'd never felt before. When Vlad Blutstein agreed to hire Nathan as the captain of the Eyrie Guard, he hadn't been sure what to expect either, but it certainly hadn't been to fall in love with a disabled werewolf.

Women save the day
Reviewed: 10-11-21
I adore Naomi Novik's female protagonists. They're strong and clever and kind. They are the ones to save the day. The stories are so beautifully written, that I don't even mind that they tend to end up with men who don't deserve them. I am content as long as they are happy by the end of the book.

Story
Seventeen-year-old Aderyn ("Ryn") only cares about two things: her family and her family's graveyard. And right now, both are in dire straits. Since the death of their parents, Ryn and her siblings have been scraping together a meager existence as gravediggers in the remote village of Colbren, which sits at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to the fae. The problem with being a gravedigger in Colbren, though, is that the dead don't always stay dead.

Goat is the MVP
Reviewed: 10-09-21
Did I buy this for the goat?
Yes.
Did I forget I bought this for the goat?
Also yes.
Was I delighted to lean about the goat all over again?
YEP.
But goat aside, this feels like a classic fairytale with zombies. I loved all the characters, not just the goat. I would also love this with a sad ending, though I suppose the happy one fits the fairytale format better.

Story
In Wisdom, Shelter. That’s the official motto of the Scholomance. I suppose you could even argue that it’s true—only the wisdom is hard to come by, so the shelter’s scant. Our beloved school does its best to devour all its students—but now that I’ve reached my senior year and have actually won myself a handful of allies, it’s suddenly developed a particular craving for me. Even if I somehow make it through the endless waves of maleficaria that it keeps throwing at me, I haven’t any idea how my allies and I are going to make it through the graduation hall alive.

Read this and join me in the desperate wait
Reviewed: 10-09-21
SPOILER: this book ends in a cliffhanger.
But so did the previous one and the wait was well worth it.
Never thought I would be this invested in a magical school book with a teenage protagonist named Galadriel with a love interest named Orion written in first person. But it so well written and the school is so compelling and even the "I don't want to be bad even though the world sees me as monster" is so well done, that I feel horrible to describe the books this way.
I love how resourceful and resilient and kind El is, despite her circumstances. I love that this book made me like the school full of monsters with a horribly high death toll.
I can't wait to read the next one.

Story
Late Victorian London. When James Miller, the most respectable of Scottish businessmen, is pulled, dead, from the Thames, his daughter is drawn into an investigation which reveals a whole world of secrets and corruption. Alongside local detective Culley, Catriona’s search for her father’s killer leads all the way to the tragic truth behind the ghostly legend of The Darkwater Bride and the power of her deadly kiss. The Darkwater Bride combines the genres of the Victorian mystery thriller with the equally classic Victorian mode of the ghostly tale.

Not bad, just not what I expexted
Reviewed: 10-09-21
I finished the book and liked the ending, but overall wasn't that into the story. Or more precisely, it didn't sit well with me at this time. I didn't really need a reminder of how bad people can be right now. Even though I recognize it's not the play's fault, I can't bring myself to give it a better rating.
