Story
Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they’ve rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple—it’s their house, and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe.

What ending?

I was left hanging at the end. Was the house in the woods their savior? Rose was more resilient than all of the others.

Story
In 1954, 63-year-old Maine farmer Annie Wilkins embarked on an impossible journey. She had no money and no family, she had just lost her farm, and her doctor had given her only two years to live. But Annie wanted to see the Pacific Ocean before she died. She ignored her doctor’s advice to move into the county charity home. Instead, she bought a cast-off brown gelding named Tarzan, donned men’s dungarees, and headed south in mid-November, hoping to beat the snow.

What a life!

This book held mustard with me because of Annie’s’s dogged determination to hit the road with only two horses and a dog to fulfill her dream of California. She was a fighter, animal lover and keeper of her dreams, making a difference with all she met during her journey. Elizabeth Letts tells Annie’s’s story well!

First time I’ve read a novel straight through, because I couldn’t put it down! An exciting thriller, the reader begging for more. Really liked the format of short chapters developing an understanding from each person’s “story.”
