Still so very relevant

I finally listened to this for the first time in 2023, even though it was published in 2018. An amazing journey and story touching on topics as relevant today as they were then. Not enough has changed, listen to this book and it will encourage you about how far we had come, but how very far we still have to go as individuals and as a country.

Story
Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Good story, narration ?
Reviewed: 01-25-20
Good overall story, so I rated a 4. I rated performance low due to the narrator. There were actually times I hit fast forward to get through the overly emotional, high pitched and breathy reading. There were too many sections read like this that could have been read a little less dramatically. I would recommend this book to friends to read.

It's 1969 in New York City's Lower East Side, and word has spread of the arrival of a mystical woman, a traveling psychic who claims to be able to tell anyone the day they will die. The Gold children - four adolescents on the cusp of self-awareness - sneak out to hear their fortunes, A sweeping novel of remarkable ambition and depth, The Immortalists probes the line between destiny and choice, reality and illusion, this world and the next. It is a deeply moving testament to the power of story, the nature of belief, and the unrelenting pull of familial bonds.

lackluster ending

Overall this was a good story with an interesting twist on how we would choose to live life. What we can control and what part is fate (if that truely exists). However, the ending for Daniel was not satisfying, there wasn't enough story for Varya and it seemed to abruptly end. It almost felt like the author was being rushed to finish the book and Varya and the reader got short changed. But I would still recommend this effort. It makes you think, what would you do?
