I love Jodi Picoult, and this book was very well written. I think it was a bit too soon for me to read, though. I love to escape while reading, and this was no escape.

This book missed the mark for me...

Historical fiction is my favorite genre of book. This book just totally missed the Mark for me. I could’ve cared less about the characters; it was confusing jumping back and forth. I’m so bummed, because I was really looking forward to this.

Story
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Such a great story - awful narration!

I love, love, LOVED this book! I cannot wait to watch the series! I’ve never played chess, but now have such an interest in learning. The only reason this was difficult for me to listen to, was because the narrator was terrible. I will never listen to anything by her again. Other than that, a strong four stars from me!
If and when I recommend this book to someone, it will be a hard copy. Not through Audible.

Story
FBI Agent Nell Flynn hasn't been home in 10 years. Nell and her father, Homicide Detective Martin Flynn, have never had much of a relationship. When Martin Flynn dies in a motorcycle accident, Nell returns to the house she grew up in so that she can spread her father's ashes and close his estate. At the behest of her father's partner, Detective Lee Davis, Nell becomes involved in an investigation into the murders of two young women in Suffolk County. The further Nell digs, the more likely it seems to her that her father should be the prime suspect.

I love thriller type books, filled with twists and turns. This has a few, but was more predictable than I’d hoped for. It was a quick read, and I would pass along to someone looking for just that!

I really enjoyed this book! I felt at times the narrator didn’t fit the voice of a 39 year old woman. I felt it was more of a 59 year old, so that kind of deterred me a little. The storyline was great; loved all the twists thrown in there!
