Sad Story but Firth Makes It Worthwhile

This was my first Graham Greene novel and I'm so glad I listened to it with Firth narrating. The writing is beautiful, the story poignant, but overall a bit predictable. Still, Firth made it easy to listen to the end!

As I am leaving for my first trip to Paris in 4 days, it was helpful to have a "Survival" guide. The information and tips are extremely useful and I'm sure I'll use all of them. The instructor's voice, however, left something to be desired as he sounds like he has a bad cold. Add to that, at the end of each "very short" lesson, too much time is wasted explaining the exact same instructions on reviewing what was just learned. Not sure who's decision is was to include this each and every time (It's identical!) but not only was it annoying, it took away from the lessons in my opinion.

The Particular Sadness of Bad Writing

Overall
1 out of 5 stars

Yes, the narration if horrible, but I am mostly disappointed in a story that went absolutely nowhere and takes 8 hours to do it. Imagine being stuck on a detour that loops in circles with no scenic stimulation all day! We are led by characters with no depth and as far as I can tell, no redeeming qualities. I didn't care about anyone. Bender's hook was great and as such, obviously her agent and publisher believed it was enough. Too bad so many trees were killed to make this a "bestseller." I'm glad at least my misery was an easily deletable download.

Great Book - Horrible Narrative!

Overall
2 out of 5 stars

I've read other Kingsolver works and have always admired her style and attention to detail but I will NEVER purchase an audiobook with her vocal depiction. She is dry, grating and turns what would otherwise be a fine piece of fiction into a boring punishment. I can't imagine why any professional would choose her, especially when there are so many talented actor/voice over candidates out there, unless it was a completely self-indulgent decision on her part. Hopefully she will bask in her literary success and leave the audio to the actors!
