Interesting, yet disturbing

Overall
3 out of 5 stars

At the recommendation of friends, I purchased this audio book. I had a general idea of the book's premise going in, but the level of detail I encountered grew to be less interesting and more disturbing. I will give the author credit for a flamboyant and colorful writing style that paints a vivid word picture of his life as an adolescent. And his use of pop culture reference points from the 1970’s and 80’s kept me engaged along the way. But as I reflected on the overall story of his childhood years, I felt that this story should not have been told so a matter of fact like and with such graphic detail. This unfortunate fellow had a very dysfunctional and disturbing upbringing. And perhaps there are some lessons for all of us to learn from this tragic reality story. But I came away with a sad and sour taste in my mouth from the experience. It was almost like watching an episode of a Jerry Springer show that had been adapted for PBS as a documentary.

I really enjoyed this audio book. It put a human face on the Truman presidency. David McCullough's reading of the book was a big plus as his voice and inflection really added to the listening experience. The book is a must for anyone with an interest in US history.

Just O.K. but I hoped for more

I just finished listening to "A Good Walk Spoiled" and found it to be less than I had hoped. I am a big fan of the PGA tour and have attended more than a dozen PGA events around the country over the years. The book provides a summary of the 1994 PGA tour season but does so in a "sports page" style of writing. Most of the naration was a string of results from the highlighted tournaments of the season. "Nick Price did this..then Tom Watson did that.." It seemed to lack the colorful "behind the scenes" stories that I had hoped for. Most of the book detailed the 4 majors and the hand full of PGA stars that battled for the tournament titles of 1994. I find Rick Reilly's writing style to be more fun such as his book "Who's Your Caddy". All this being said, I will give Feinstein's book on the US Open at Bethpage a try but will do so with a slight hestitation.

I took a chance on this audio book as I had not heard of the title or author prior to my purchase. I assumed that the content and quality would be top notch because of the Steven Covey testimonial, etc. Instead, I found the delivery of reader/author to be too direct, too "in your face" about the subject matter. At times the reader/author delivered his points in a condesending tone like we were all rookies going through sales "boot camp". His points were on track for the most part but I just couldn't get past his "style" and delivery. Too brash for me.
