Story
Melanie Hale is a devoted mother to her two children, a diligent caregiver to her ailing mother-in-law and a trusted neighbor in their wealthy Louisiana community. Above all, she's a loving partner to her wonderful husband, Collin. Then there are the parts of herself that Mel keeps hidden. She's exhausted, worried and unfulfilled. So much so that one night, after a writers' group meeting, Mel begins an affair with a successful local author named Luke. Suddenly she's transformed into a role she doesn't recognize—a woman who deceives with unseemly ease.

I just finished listening to the audible, and the story is still swirling around my head and saturating into my soul. The author wove the story expertly; from all perspectives. It was gripping, horrific, and beautiful. The narration was wonderfully done. I will be looking for more from this author and this narrator.

Nora Stephens' life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

Expected an enjoyable book, and it was. A great story with beautiful, eloquent analogies and off beat humor. But it was also so much more for me. It resonated. The insight into the characters and the twists of human nature, well, I just had to pause the audible sometimes for it to sink in. Loved the audible so much (narration was great!), I’m going to buy the book. I want to read and mark up a hard copy. It’s that good, to me. I’ll also be checking out her other books.

Lila Bruce Breedlove never quite felt at home in Wesleyan, Georgia, especially after her father’s untimely demise when she was a child. Both Lila and her brother, Henry, fled north after high school, establishing fulfilling lives of their own. In contrast, their younger sister, Abigail, opted to remain behind to dote on their domineering, larger-than-life mother, Geneva. When their elderly mother dies suddenly and suspiciously in the muscadine arbor behind the family estate, Lila and Henry return to the town that essentially raised them.
