Breakneck pace, characters to root for

I don’t read many action thrillers--the last one was The Da Vinci Code--but a friend recommended this, and I’m so glad he did. The plot got more and more catastrophic in scale, while the description of Istanbul was so vibrant I could practically hear and smell the place. (Now I want to go there.) But the impending disaster only mattered because we got to know the characters well. The reader does a lovely job rendering the specific accents of a very international cast—you always know whose head you're in. The British diplomat hero John Savage—aptly named—has a love/hate relationship with his Turkish police pal, and the pal’s archaeologist sister, and I kept reading to find out if/how they survive. Dan Brown could take lessons. He wrote a real page turner, but the characters were cardboard. I raced through Palladium in a few days, and will now look for more titles from Leigh Turner.

I’ve read and reread Jane Eyre, many times, but never listened to it before now. This reader’s talent and clear understanding of her material gave me new insight and appreciation for a long-time favorite. 19 hours of delight! Thanks, Audible!

I thought the premise of the story sounded intriguing, and the brief sample was fine, but after one chapter I could no longer handle the whininess and cliche-ridden vocabulary of the first-person narrator. Also, the reader's voice became annoying over time, though whether she really sounds whiny or I just got fed up with the writing is another question. Not for me.

For a thriller, it's incredibly dull

I've listened to 2 hours of this, and that's two hours I'll never get back. The narrator is fine; it's the story that's lacking. It's all navel-gaving into the mind of an unpleasant, whining narrator. I hear there's a big twist at the end--happy to say I can live without knowing it.
