Story
It starts off simply enough. (Doesn't it always?) Jack has been on hiatus since the tragic events in Harbingers. With his beloved Gia's encouragement he dips his toe back into the fix-it pool.Christy Pickering's 18-year-old daughter is dating Jerry Bethlehem, a man twice her age. Christy sensed something shady and sinister about him, so she hired a private investigator to look into his past. But the PI isn't returning her calls. Will Jack find out why?

Story fine but annoying narration
Reviewed: 09-26-23
Story was good although not as imaginative as some others in the series. I like the build-up of dread from one book to the next as some grim event in the future comes closer. Like other reviewers I struggled with the narration, both the constant shifts in volume that made listening difficult and the whiny, nasal tone of voice given to Jack.

Story
Rick Hayden's brother, Keith, a prominent zoologist at NYU, walks out of his office one day and disappears. The only clue they have are his brother's book, which mentions "the God Gene". A million or so years ago, a gene designated hsa-mir-3998 appeared as if by magic from the junk DNA of the hominids who eventually evolved into Homo sapiens. It became a key player in brain development - specifically creativity - and laymen started calling it "the God Gene".

OK but disappointing after Panacea
Reviewed: 06-29-23
This book picks up the story of Rick and Laura after Panacea and also involves a quest of sorts in an exotic setting. Although the basic premise is quite imaginative, the story is slow-moving with too much detail in the first half on the personal lives of the two main characters. It improves when action moves to Africa but is less exciting than Panacea. Rick also comes across as a more boring and wrongheaded character than in the previous book although this may be due partly to the narration.

Story
Opening with "A Second Home", in which Mantel describes the death of her stepfather, Giving Up the Ghost is a wry, shocking, and beautifully written memoir of childhood, ghosts (real and metaphorical), illness, and family. Finally, at the memoir's conclusion, Mantel explains how a series of medical misunderstandings and neglect left her childless, and how the ghosts of the unborn have come to haunt her life as a writer.

Wonderful book, honest and full of insight, beautifully written and read - I just wish it was longer.
