Story
They say Black Dow's killed more men than winter and clawed his way to the throne of the North up a hill of skulls. The King of the Union, ever a jealous neighbor, is not about to stand smiling by while he claws his way any higher. The orders have been given, and the armies are toiling through the northern mud. Thousands of men are converging on a forgotten ring of stones, on a worthless hill, in an unimportant valley, and they've brought a lot of sharpened metal with them.

The best First Law and that's a damn high bar.
Reviewed: 02-22-23
I'm not the only one who says this is the best First Law and I won't be the last. Just because a lot say something though, don't make it any less true. If you like First Law, if you like epics, hell if you just like a solid story with compelling characters then The Heroes will be for you.

Story
Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught in one feud too many, he's on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian - leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies. Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules.

One helluva cast of characters and fantasy world.

Possibly the greatest cast of fantasy characters ever written. the story is mostly set up for events to come but is still an absolute page turner.

A great third book, but still a third book.

I enjoyed Oathbringer, I enjoyed it a lot. However, I must say that I enjoyed it a bit less than Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. I feel as the universe and story expands some of the immediate focus on character and conflict gets lost to lore. This is a common problem for fantasy books and perhaps it is one unique to my personal tastes. With that said there is plenty here that is truly phenomenal. Well written characters continue to push a fun and well thought out universe. I find myself absolutely enthralled with the cast and want to know exactly where they will end up. The action is top notch while some of the romance can be, let's be frank, almost anit-sexy at times; but it still put a smile on my face and I enjoyed it more often than not. I can't wait to listen/read Rhythm of War and continue this exceptional adventure.

I loved Way of Kings but I believe I may love this book even more. The action is heart pumping and the characters are likable and well written. Just as the Way of Kings ended in an incredible climax so too does Words of Radiance. Also, no spoilers but when a certain character says "Honor is dead, but I'll see what I can do" I got legit chills.

Story
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Sanderson knows how to set up characters, conflicts, and compelling worlds. It helps that he also knows pay off and this fantasy novel masterfully positions its fleshed out characters in a climax that I still think about and smile.

A decent yet shallow exploration of commanders.
Reviewed: 03-04-20
The book is short, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. it provides a decent overview of these various military commanders but it never goes in depth enough to really feel substantial. It also has a few inaccuracies such as calling Ulysses S Grant the 15th President rather than the 18th. Overall it provides a good overview and starting point for research but shouldn't be the main source.
