Story
A snowmelt has sent floodwaters down to the fields of the Red River Valley, dragging the body of an unidentified Native woman into the town of Ada. The only evidence the medical examiner recovers is a torn piece of paper inside her bra: a hymnal written in English and Ojibwe. Cash Blackbear, a 19-year-old Ojibwe woman, sometimes helps Sheriff Wheaton, her guardian, on his investigations. Now she knows her search for justice for this anonymous victim will take her to the White Earth Reservation, a place she once called home.

Great Story

Once again, the author gets into the heart of history & it's relevance to present time. This story was cleverly told, without being predictable! Even when you hit that point of connecting all the pieces, the story just keeps you rolling forward. Then it allows you to slow down to reflect. I find myself liking Cash: cheering her on & wanting her to succeed. I look forward to the next Cash BlackBear story!

Story
Her name is Renee Blackbear, but what most people call the 19-year-old Ojibwe woman is Cash. She lived all her life in Fargo, sister city to Minnesota’s Moorhead, just downriver from the Cities. She has one friend, the Sheriff Wheaton. He pulled her from her mother’s wrecked car when she was three. Since then, Cash navigated through foster homes and at 13 was working farms, driving trucks.

Great Story

I was skeptical b/c of the age of the main character: how she could be so intuitive for her age. But, as the story progressed, I began to relate to her more and more. I started to understand her on many levels. Her truth is strong and determined.
This storyteller did an amazing job bringing this book to life. Also, I admire her ability to bring focus to the very real tragedies of today's missing and/or forgotten people.
I look forward to the next story in this series.

Story
Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms: for instance, Native Hawaiians believe it summons the Hukai’po, the spirits of ancient warriors, and Native Mexicans say it calls Lechuza, a witch that can transform into an owl. But what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear—and even follow you home. These shiver-inducing tales introduce listeners to ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge.

I really enjoyed the stories, and loved the readers. I immediately felt each story thru their distinctive Native story telling way. It was comfortable and easy, while drawing me all the way in. It was over too soon.

In Trace, Scarpetta travels to Richmond, Virginia, at the odd behest of the recently appointed Chief Medical Examiner, who claims that he needs her help to solve a perplexing crime. When she arrives, however, Scarpetta finds that nothing is as she expected: her former lab is in the final stages of demolition; the inept chief isn't the one who requested her after all; her old assistant chief has developed personal problems that he won't reveal; and a glamorous FBI agent, whom Marino dislikes instantly, meddles with the case.

I like that the readers.try to change their voices to match the characters BUT sometimes it doesn't quite make it. I'd rather the voices be from different people, esp if the reader wants to act it out.
