Story
From the acclaimed author who enthralled the world with Exodus, Battle Cry, QB VII, Topaz, and other beloved classics of twentieth-century fiction comes a sweeping and powerful epic adventure that captures the "terrible beauty" of Ireland during its long and bloody struggle for freedom. It is the electrifying story of an idealistic young Catholic rebel and the valiant and beautiful Protestant girl who defied her heritage to join his cause. It is a tale of love and danger, of triumph at an unthinkable cost.

Story
Here is the final book of unparalleled historian Tony Judt. Where Judt’s masterpiece Postwar redefined the history of modern Europe by uniting the stories of its eastern and western halves, Thinking the Twentieth Century unites the century’s conflicted intellectual history into a single soaring narrative. The 20th century comes to life as the age of ideas - a time when, for good or for ill, the thoughts of the few reigned over the lives of the many.

A book both deep and baste
Reviewed: 01-07-24
Tony Judt is a brilliant erudite thinker and a fine writer. Having listened to Postwar with pleasure and profit, I came to this unusual book of conversations. The only criticism I have is that there need to be two readers with clearly different voices so that the listener knows when it’s Judt who’s speaking and when it’s Snyder. I love the mix of personal and historical, intellectual and emotional in this unusual book. I feel very sad to keep remembering that Tony Judt is no longer in our world. May his memory and writing endure as blessings.

I will be 90 in a few months and the Truman presidency was the first I was old enough to appreciate in real time. This biography moved me in its recall of those early years of my political comprehension and confirmed my life long admiration of HST.

Story
What do we owe the past? How to make peace with a dark family history? Burkhard Bilger hardly knew his grandfather growing up. His parents immigrated to Oklahoma from Germany after World War II, and though his mother was an historian, she rarely talked about her father or what he did during the war. Then one day a packet of letters arrived from Germany, yellowing with age, and a secret history began to unfold.

Story
Traditionally known as a dirty, congested, and dangerous city, 19th Century Paris was transformed in an extraordinary period from 1848 to 1870, when the government launched a huge campaign to build streets, squares, parks, churches, and public buildings. The Louvre Palace was expanded, Notre-Dame Cathedral was restored and the French masterpiece of the Second Empire, the Opra Garnier, was built.

How Paris became a special, beautiful city
Reviewed: 08-19-17
This well written book has helped me finally understand how Paris got the special ordered, but also grand and charming, look that it has. The urban planning project called "les grandes traveaux" gets rooted in its historical, political contest, with focus on the Second Empire of Napolean III and his Prefect for Paris, Baron Haussmann. Having heard this book well read, I am now able to better understand the layout of boulevards and placement of iconic structures. I recommend this book for tourists like me, who want to enrich their time in Paris, as well as for others who approach its material from more abstract directions.
