Story
On a rocky beach in the southwest of Ireland, the body of Jimmy O’Reilly, sixty-nine years old and dressed in a suit and his dancing shoes, is propped on a boulder, staring sightlessly out to sea. A cryptic message is spelled out next to the body with sixty-nine polished black stones and a discarded vial of deadly veterinarian medication lies nearby. Jimmy was a wealthy racehorse owner, known far and wide as The Dancing Man. In a town like Dingle, everyone knows a little something about everyone else. But dig a bit deeper, and there’s always much more to find.

Could have been better
Reviewed: 06-13-24
This could have been a much better experience. The narrator was monotone and ineffectual. Some parts felt like she was reading it for the first time. The last few chapters are better, but overall not a great performance. Maybe would be a better read than and audible.

I wanted to enjoy this book but haven't finished it. The narrator uses one voice for all of the characters, male or female, making the story difficult to follow.

The writing was remedial at best. The body count was innumerable. The story's "hero" just couldn't be killed. I stuck it out only because it was a novella and would end soon enough. Skip it.

Story
Ex-crime reporter Leonard Blaylock spends his days on an unusual hobby, developing strangers’ forgotten and discarded rolls of film. He loves the small mysteries the photographs reveal to him. Then Leonard finds something no one would ever expect, or want, to see captured on film—the murder of a young woman. But that’s impossible, because the woman is already dead. Leonard was there when it happened five years earlier.

It is 1890, and in the days before Christmas, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson are visited at Baker Street by a new client. Eve Allerthorpe, eldest daughter of a grand but somewhat eccentric Yorkshire-based dynasty, is greatly distressed, as she believes she is being haunted by a demonic Christmas spirit. Her late mother told her terrifying tales of the sinister Black Thurrick, and Eve is sure that she has seen the creature from her bedroom window. What is more, she has begun to receive mysterious parcels of birch twigs, the Black Thurrick’s calling card.

Tame Cozy Mystery

Not the best book I’ve listened to. Very tame and drawn out story of a 30 year old death. The performance was as best as could be expected with endless run on sentences, and information repeated over and over. Your grandma might like this story. Otherwise give it a pass.
