Story
Travelers in the Third Reich is an extraordinary history of the rise of the Nazis based on fascinating firsthand accounts, drawing together a multitude of voices and stories, including politicians, musicians, diplomats, schoolchildren, communists, scholars, athletes, poets, fascists, artists, tourists, and even celebrities like Charles Lindbergh and Samuel Beckett. Their experiences create a remarkable three-dimensional picture of Germany under Hitler - one so palpable that the listener will feel, hear, even breathe the atmosphere.

Listening Got Me Tracked As LGBTQ+
Reviewed: 01-13-23
Per Audible, this comedy series is LGBTQ+ and listening pigeonholed me as LGBTQ+. I just got via email an UNrequested "report" for 2022 of my Audible listening. That I was being tracked was insulting, infuriating, blood pressure raising. I joined Audible to own this well-done comedy series. I have often played it as background or with the sleep timer something I can fall asleep to. It is as much LGBTQ+ in theme, plot, story as one of the Pope's sermons. So, it was miscategorized by Audible probably because the tiny brain trust thought it would bring in more money. And then I got an intrusive report card from Audible on my listening behavior...as though Audible is the only listening service in the world. The report card, of course, chose to note the number of minutes I had spent listening to LGBTQ+ selections...when the only selection was this one, listened to many times not for prurient purposes but because it borders on brilliant, is truly Everyman funny....and sex plays no part in the series. The two main characters are gay, share a home...everyone else is heterosexual and there is some offstage sexual encounter because one of the women gets pregnant. Shame on Audible!

Story
When the body of man is found in a canal, damaged by the tides, carrying no wallet, and wearing only one shoe, Brunetti has little to work with. No local has filed a missing-person report, and no hotel guests have disappeared. Where was the crime scene? And how can Brunetti identify the man when he can’t show pictures of his face? The autopsy shows a way forward: It turns out the man was suffering from a rare, disfiguring disease.

Narrator Stinks!
Reviewed: 07-02-22
I have listened two two other Donna Leon books in this series...both by excellent narrators. David Colacci couldn't narrate his way out of a paper bag. Why was he chosen as the narrator for the bulk of her books? He has no narration skills, talent...that he has an American accent just makes his uselessness as a narrator even worse.

Can't believe I Paid $ For This!

A few minutes in and "phoned" was used in this book set in 1910 UK. A minimum of 10+ years too soon! Note to author: yes, this is a meant to be a throw-away cozy mystery, but do you imagine anyone from Downton Abbey saying "phoned," especially in a pre-Great War episode?
