Story
Maisie Dobbs got her start as a maid in an aristocratic London household when she was thirteen. Her employer, suffragette Lady Rowan Compton, soon became her patron, taking the remarkably bright youngster under her wing. Lady Rowan’s friend, Maurice Blanche, often retained as an investigator by the European elite, recognized Maisie’s intuitive gifts. The outbreak of war changed everything. Ten years after the Armistice, in the spring of 1929, Maisie sets out on her own as a private investigator, one who has learned that coincidences are meaningful, and truth elusive.

Enjoyable but not revelatory
Reviewed: 07-08-24
Firstly, the narration was superb. I’ll be looking out for more titles read by Ms. Cassidy. Secondly, the book: this was a nice little book to get stuck into and I enjoyed it. For chief strengths I’d say that it is very effective at pulling the heartstrings in a few places and I’m not an especially emotional person. Its chief weaknesses I think are (1) the way the flashback structure - just two big chunks - lets a lot of the tension out of the mystery plot by digressing for a huge amount of time and (2) Maisie as a protagonist is just a little too… perfect, and forbearing, and patient - in a way I am inclined to occasionally find annoying and which takes me out of the story a bit as she doesn’t feel real at times.

The performance was wonderful, and these are some of my favorite mysteries. Deftly mixing humor and social commentary and intrigue. The characters are fantastic.

Can recommend. Excellent narrator and absolutely typical (in the best way) golden age murder mystery.

Story
Colombo, 1990. Maali Almeida—war photographer, gambler, and closet queen—has woken up dead in what seems like a celestial visa office. His dismembered body is sinking in the serene Beira Lake and he has no idea who killed him. In a country where scores are settled by death squads, suicide bombers, and hired goons, the list of suspects is depressingly long, as the ghouls and ghosts with grudges who cluster round can attest. But even in the afterlife, time is running out for Maali.

I found this to be an excellent overview, combining a number of different disciplines in a hope for a holistic view. It was fascinating and engrossing and at times appalling and funny. 10/10, can recommend
