Just Not Into Drug Dealers
Reviewed: 04-08-22
Sorry...this may be a good book but I personally detest individuals who become rich and notorious while destroying the lives of others. There are too many rich people who do this daily, however, I particularly dislike those who prey on their own culture and neighborhoods.
I could not read past the second chapter because I had no empathy or interest in any of the characters.

Horrific and Spirit Draining
Reviewed: 05-23-21
This book, though comprehensive and well written, drains the reader of all feelings of joy. It sends the soul into despair and makes one grieve while reading it. It reminds the reader that "true evil" in its rarest form can exist and endure through generations and that fear can dominate and rule a family, a community and relationships.
Please do not attempt to read this book if you are in a period of loss or grief; it's contents will only further depression you. However, if you are seeking a psychological examination of generational abuse and madness, this book is a great choice.

Wife. Mother. Breadwinner. Penelope Ruiz-Kar is doing it all - and barely keeping it together. Meanwhile, her best friend, Jenny Sweet, appears to be sailing through life. As close as the two women are, Jenny’s passionate marriage, pristine house, and ultra-polite child stand in stark contrast to Penelope’s underemployed husband, Sanjay, their unruly brood, and the daily grind she calls a career.

Slow Starter. but Good Ending

Narrative on friendship, family, love, loss and individual growth. Characters were well rounded and thought out. Right amount of attention given to the addiction arc of the story. Great for author to give further information/resources on opioid addiction.

Sad and Stoll Going On
Reviewed: 01-09-19
This novel displays the power of love , the depths of hope and the historical mistreatment of the poor and people of color. The author gives the reader a sense of sadness and hope, while giving us characters that reveal all levels of love towards self and one another.
Well written and easy to read, but difficult at times to feel the characters pain and frustration.

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.
