Story
Imagine a 1980s world of sumptuous hotel rooms, restaurants, New York City penthouses, and the powerful men who move easily between these pinnacles of luxury. They are music producers, rock stars, writers, and restaurateurs. They are household names like Billy Joel, Art Garfunkel, Eric Clapton, and Sting. And yet, each man has an entire aspect to his life that he doesn’t talk about publicly—his depression, his rocky marriage, his feelings of shame and failure, his private loss of faith. And now: The phone rings. Imagine the woman who has each of these men at her beck and call.

A story worth listening to, in spite of one caveat
Reviewed: 08-29-23
The strengths of this novel out weight the weaknesses. The story and the characters were interesting. However, the tone throughout was languid, even though there were surprises that sustained my interest. Susan Bennett is an outstanding reader, but the protagonist who she portrayed (Tess)in my opinion, was annoyingly whinny and unbelievably naïve in almost every situation that she encountered. Her constant, mellow acquiescence almost made me give up on this book. However, in the end, I found the story worth finishing and recommending. But, with fewer stars than I would have like to give. I would certainly consider other Chamberlain novels.

Story
Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and to devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must make her way in a court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

Someone should make the movie!
Reviewed: 08-17-21
im not fond of stories that go back and forth between the present day and past history; its too intrusive. However, D. Bryce has struct an excellent balance with this tale about a African American filmmaker researching the past history of a 1920s Black diva and her intriguing, even dangerous past. It is a story filled with historical references, suspence, romance, and a cast of interesting characters. Narrators, Tracey Lee and Ronald Peet are pitch perfect !. The story has all the elements that make it a great candidate for a cable t.v. movie. somebody, please do it.

Reviewed: 05-31-21
This was a good and entertaining story that was in my opinion ruined by the reader Alex Wyndham. his voice was raspy and wispered at the start of a sentence and always ended as if he were asking a question. As much as I liked this Author, I will never listen to another book if Wyndham is the narrator. Sorry.

The Bride Test is full of redundancy, stereotypes, clichés from every romantic movie you have ever seen, and illogical happenings. The only reason that I could finish it was because of the excellent reader. I rarely write a critical review, but this novel was so poorly conceived, that I could not prevent myself from doing so.
