Story
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

I was surprised at how interesting this was. This is not my usual genre, and in fact this sort of thing usually would turn me away. Not the case here. so compelling and well delivered.

Story
Ever since Dory met Rosabelle, a real true friend whose imagination and high spirits match her own, school has been pretty good. But now the class is learning to read, and it's proving to be a challenge for Dory. While Rosabelle can read chapter books in her head, Dory is stuck with baby books about a happy little farm. Dory wishes for a potion to turn her into a reader, but things don't go as planned. Suddenly a naughty little girl who looks an awful lot like Dory's imaginary nemesis, Mrs. Gobble Gracker, shows up.

compelling romance with rich story
Reviewed: 06-17-16
The narrator and the actor playing Olly do a fantastic job. Easy on the ears and compelling.
The main characters are well drawn and the story line is gripping. The love story makes up the thrust of the narrative, but Maddy's evolving relationship with her mother and her growing sense of the world deepen the stakes.
The structure if the story is also well crafted. we get a perfect three act story with a riveting climax. The author should really be proud of the skill she shows here.
Spoiler alert:
My only complaint is that the narrator is ultimately too soft on her mother throughout the book. I'll avoid saying more here but there are some serious infractions that are glossed over and the writer also never confronts the fact that the narrator would likely be socially stunted and unable to perform a lot of life's essential tasks without a lot of help later. I was surprised the writer didn't articulate the fear the narrators would have obviously felt when entering the world and going to LAX of all places. Traveling is stressful in most circumstances. imagine having never left your house, used a check card in person, gone through a line, or seen hoards of people together at once. the writer fails to articulate how overwhelming the world can be after years of isolation.
The writing is very smooth and creative, making this book well worth the read.
