Please, Adrian Dobson, don't try accents!
Reviewed: 06-25-23
I enjoyed the book, the plot, the characters etc... There were a couple of mild twists in the tale that sent me off on different tangents, so it kept my interest.
The narration was fine... until he tried the different accents and tried to sound like a woman! To be honest, he was as bad as Dick Van Dyke trying to be a cockney in Mary Poppins. Unfortunately, it was distracting.
I may have to read the next books if Mr Dobson is narrating them.

I'm enjoying the series overall and Scott Brick delivers a good performance as usual.
But... boy do some of the characters go on and on! There's simply too much verbiage in both the conversations and the story itself.
It could have been at least 2 hours shorter.

Mostly a good listen

It took me a little while to get into the book, but it certainly got interesting further along.
The plot had me guessing as I tried to work out exactly what was going on. I was bamboozled by some of the technical explanations. I think that's also partly due to that as I was listening in the car I couldn't give it all my attention and flicking back a few 'pages' wasn't practical.
The narrator does a good job, though some of his accents are a bit ropey.
Worth a credit.

I enjoyed the plot. I enjoyed the writing. I enjoyed the performance.
I didn't enjoy the depressing life that the main character lives. Fast forwarding became a very viable option when yet another awful/sad thing happens to him.
And yet another divorcing/divorced character in a book. Please authors, can't you use something a bit more original to inject angst in your stories? Not EVERYONE divorces.
That's only my opinion of course.
Not his best book.

I enjoyed the book and really liked the timbre of the narrator's voice. The story was enjoyable even if, in places, it was a bit predictable. I'd really like to read/listen to at least ONE modern detective novel where the investigator ISN'T divorced!
A good listen overall.

I normally love the detail that the author puts into his stories, but this time it's just too much.
My ears did the aural equivalent of my eyes glazing over. It's technical - very, very technical.
I mostly listen to my books in the car and with this one I found myself blanking out large portions.
There are interesting bits, however, so it isn't a complete washout.
Oh, and some of the accents are way off! It would have been better that the narrator didn't attempt some of them.

I was amazed at how quickly the story sped by. There were a few moments when the descriptions lagged a bit, but they were minor irritations.
The characters were good and it's true I'd have preferred a bit more of the book title, but it was an enjoyable listen.
Quite violent, as a lot of his books.

Stuart Woods, the best-selling author of L.A. Times and Heat, has created a haunting thriller full of ghostly images, murder and old family secrets. Part detective story, part ghost story, part Southern gothic - this absorbing novel will fascinate listeners as a small town’s present, past and future converge.

First 'lad lit' I've ever experienced.
Reviewed: 11-23-14
I had to search on the Internet for the male equivalent of 'chick lit'. The definition should have had this book as an example.
I've not even finished the book, but I felt that I really had to write this review. (I will finish it if only because other reviewers have said there's something interesting at the end).
The main character falls in and out of relationships and beds like changing books at a library. The spooky bit's confusing and slotted into descriptions of marathon sex sessions. The cliffhangers are... there. Often.
Under the Lake? I'm merely underwhelmed.

But the post-mortem reveals that this is no case of accidental drowning…. Local detective Patrik Hedström has just become a father. It is his grim task to discover who could be behind the methodical murder of a child both he and his partner, Erica, knew well. He knows the real question - and answer - lies with why.

Almost every clichéd character under the sun!
Reviewed: 11-22-14
Note - there may be some spoilers in this review.
I listened to the end and I quite enjoyed the story - it was an agreeable way to pass the time.
Was it a great listen? No.
Was I waiting with bated breath for the denouement? No.
Will I get another book by this author? Probably not.
Why?
There were an awful lot of clichés with the characters: the mother with postnatal depression, the religious fanatic, the controlling mother, the abused child, the bumbling policeman, the mentally challenged young man, the child abuser (nothing to do with the abused child), the battered wife...
Need I go on?
There were also bits of the story that seemed totally disconnected. Maybe they related to an earlier book so then they would make sense? I got the feeling they were there to pad out the book or make way for a sequel.
Finally, the narration was good except for some pauses that to me, seemed to be in the wrong places.

DI Colin Anderson is having a bad week. His conviction of paedophile Skelpie Fairbairn is declared unsafe, putting Fairbairn back on Glasgow's streets. Then a succession of strange crimes - a gangster torched alive; a teenage boy tortured then dropped off a bridge; a police suicide; a young girl tied to the river bank and left for the tide – leave Anderson with his hands full and questioning whether this array of evils are all, somehow, linked.

This book is gruesome, not only because of what happens in the story, but also because it's a comment on the world we now live in.
I can't say it was enjoyable - it was gripping though.
I wouldn't recommend it to the fainthearted, but it isn't a horror book in the classic sense.
