Story
Dalinar Kholin challenged the evil god Odium to a contest of champions with the future of Roshar on the line. The Knights Radiant have only ten days to prepare—and the sudden ascension of the crafty and ruthless Taravangian to take Odium’s place has thrown everything into disarray. Desperate fighting continues simultaneously worldwide—Adolin in Azir, Sigzil and Venli at the Shattered Plains, and Jasnah in Thaylenah. The former assassin, Szeth, must cleanse his homeland of Shinovar from the dark influence of the Unmade.

Dalinar, Kaladin, and Adolin are just spectacular

Day one felt a little jumbled with pacing. The meat really doesn’t take place till day 7 where it never takes its foot off the gas. The storylines you actually want to read are great as expected however, I don’t understand Shallan’s importance. In a series with so many wonderful and selfless characters she is just such a selfish and self serving character posed as a protagonist. Some major character arcs felt forced as I don’t feel the past books have built up the relationship.
Ultimately however there seems to be in modern culture an emphasis on sensual love being the strongest form of love although I disagree. Bring back the friendships like Frodo and Sam who love each other in a brotherly way rather than physical.
Kate and Michael have been voices for my whole childhood.
All in all. The series is masterclass. I choose to read the last day out of the book and I believe that to be a wise decision. Resolution to a decade of love for these characters. Thank you Sanderson.

Story
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

The scope and imagination is second to none. What else can be said for the High Fantasy author of this generation. Captivating and powerful. I feel I could study these various cultures.

Story
Two nations at war. One prize beyond compare. For generations, the Hundred Isles have built their ships from the bones of ancient dragons to fight an endless war. The dragons disappeared, but the battles for supremacy persisted. Now the first dragon in centuries has been spotted in far-off waters, and both sides see a chance to shift the balance of power in their favor. Because whoever catches it will win not only glory, but the war.

Grand Ideas, choppy narrative.

I like the premise, thrust into a world of brutality. I also appreciate that the author had the decency to not show the scene of an innocent character being sacrificed which to me is a huge plus. Authors like GRRM use shock and awe to further their story which to me is a negative. I like the implication of pure evil without being completely exposed to it.
The character development never felt like it gradually happened. The main character never seemed to struggle. We met him in the dumps and almost instantly he became a respected grand character. Also what is the magic system… power limitations?
I am not starting the second book right away but I fully imagine I will listen to it. The story does stick with you in a good way and I am curious to see if the characters will further develop.

A clean enjoyable fantasy.

This series has been a fun little escape. It tells an enjoyable story with, for the most part, enjoyable characters that have a meaningful and well rounded character arc. The story is driven forward in a smart and clever fashion not using the current trend of gratuitous scenes and shock value to keep readers/listeners engaged.
In all this is a fun listen, if you enjoy fantasy and are looking for a new series to dive into while at work or driving it is worth it. Don’t expect this to be ground breaking or life changing but it is worth the listen.
