Story
In an opulent honeymoon suite in Watch Hill, Rhode Island’s most desirable wedding venue, 29-year-old Callie Holt is spending her wedding night lying in a bathtub shoveling down a pizza; her expensive white dress now splattered with sauce and her groom passed out in the next room. With her seven-hour-old marriage already imploded, Callie turns to the place of record–her phone–sifting through the photographic evidence of the past year to pinpoint where it all went wrong.

Eating disorder warning needed
Reviewed: 06-02-23
I wish there had been some sort of warning or something in the book description to show how central the main character’s bulimia was to the story. I was hoping for a light beach read and ended up in the very triggering mind of someone with an eating disorder and lots of insecurity about their body. Honestly not very enjoyable having to live through that experience with a character.

Story
Journalist Simone Stolzoff traces how work has come to dominate Americans’ lives—and why we find it so difficult to let go. Based on groundbreaking reporting and interviews with Michelin star chefs, Wall Street bankers, overwhelmed teachers and other workers across the American economy, Stolzoff exposes what we lose when we expect work to be more than a job. Rather than treat work as a calling or a dream, he asks what it would take to reframe work as a part of life rather than the entirety of our lives. What does it mean for a job to be good enough?

Great book!

The author does an amazing job laying out historical context for our work obsessed culture and using storytelling to show how people have pushed back against this in their own careers. He doesn’t give you a step by step plan but rather provides you the stories to help reflect on your own relationship with work. Highly recommend for anyone trying to not let work takeover their life.
