Story
Melanie Hale is a devoted mother to her two children, a diligent caregiver to her ailing mother-in-law and a trusted neighbor in their wealthy Louisiana community. Above all, she's a loving partner to her wonderful husband, Collin. Then there are the parts of herself that Mel keeps hidden. She's exhausted, worried and unfulfilled. So much so that one night, after a writers' group meeting, Mel begins an affair with a successful local author named Luke. Suddenly she's transformed into a role she doesn't recognize—a woman who deceives with unseemly ease.

It wasn’t bad but it could’ve been so good
Reviewed: 05-18-24
Narrator was great, she really was but she sounded much too old for the description given for Mel. It was off putting bc it seemed like Luke and Lacey were younger than her but never acknowledged. I also think too much time was devoted to describing the love affair leaving the last quarter of the book, which was she most exciting part, very rushed. I would’ve loved to have seen more development in this part of the book. It just left like there was so much more that could’ve been told. What about Claire? I was expecting more of a connection to Luke, Joe, or even Lacey or Luke’s wife but nothing. That was lost on me bc there were times when Claire’s background seemed important but in my opinion the story would’ve been the same with or without her. I think Claire could’ve been a missing twist. Also what about Rachel’s friend, that was a huge element but where did that go? What was the meaning or impact of her friend’s disappearance? Then sweet Ben. As a mother of a special needs child on the spectrum, there were some surprisingly accurate descriptions of what it’s like to parent & love a child with special needs but was also unrealistic by giving Mel so much free time, I don’t think that has to be a huge issue bc the purpose or the story wasn’t entirely about the life of a special needs parent, but seemed like if there was such a strong start, this piece of it should’ve continued with the same tempo throughout and the truth is, Mel never would’ve had that kind of time on her hands. Good story, I love the author, I would’ve preferred a younger sounding narrator to match the characters description, slow in places that didn’t matter to me and rushed and only scratched the surface of the twists, several loose ends for several characters, but I would recommend this read…once, but will not be making my “YOU GOTTA READ THIS” list to my book friends.

Story
Lily and her ex-husband, Ryle, have just settled into a civil coparenting rhythm when she suddenly bumps into her first love, Atlas, again. After nearly two years separated, she is elated that for once, time is on their side, and she immediately says yes when Atlas asks her on a date. I loved It Ends With Us but this is just a NO. Half the story is repeat of it Ends With Us just reading old letters we already heard! Super disappointed. Love the author but this book was rushed and content was mainly a copy & paste from the prior book.

Story
Jen Hansen, Kittie Spears, and Cynthia Nichols have been friends since childhood. They are now approaching 40 and their lives have changed, but their insular East Texas town has not. They stay sane by drinking wine in the afternoons, dishing about other women in the neighborhood, and bonding over the heartache of their own encroaching middle age and raising ungrateful teens.

5 Star story pairs with 2 Star Narration
Reviewed: 03-01-24
A good story, kept me interested the entire time, good twists, but TERRIBLE, I repeat…TERRIBLE narration. Not that the narrators were terrible themselves, they were fine & I like them, but an awful match for 2 of the 4 characters. Kitty & Cynthia sounded like they were in their 60’s not “turning forty” as outlined in the description. Their voices made me envision “the Golden Girls” more than a modern day healthy & active 40 yr old. Will’s narration is comically awful, to the point his voice sounds cartoonishly evil. He sounded like Count Dracula! Multiple times throughout the story, his voice stole my attention from the story and I had to repeat. I would recommend reading this book over listening to it.

The Pact = SCIENTOLOGY 🤷🏼♀️
Reviewed: 08-16-23
The entire time I kept wondering if Scientology was the inspiration for the pact. It had potential, I was interested but the climax never peaked for me. The ending was hurried, didn’t make sense, didn’t shed light on the “why” behind those whose ill deeds were the focus of the story. Just felt messy. Completely unbelievable and the “no way out” concept was completely fluff. How is there no way out from a pact? They give reasons that are superficial. Narrator did well.

What did I just read?!
Reviewed: 05-09-23
I had such high hopes for this book and this author. This was my first K L Slater read. I am overwhelmingly disappointed in this absolutely UNDERwhelming story. It was insufferably predictable, the voice of Skye, the little girl in the story, was awful, just so awful. Her voice is what I imagine the sound of a troll’s voice in a fantasy novel may sound like, utterly excruciating to listen to. Freya, the protagonist, was such a fool! I’m pretty sure neon signs and arrows pointing to the villains in this story would’ve been lost on her. Lots of unanswered questions too. The story line was so far fetched you had to displace yourself from reality to buy into it yet characters who could’ve been more included and possibly made the story more compelling and twisted were left completely out! For example, Susan and her husband, what about Jeanne? Brenna? So many more interesting conclusions could’ve saved this wretched, hokey tale! I strongly caution you to be prepared to be very underwhelmed!

What did I just read???

I love this authors work but this was just…disappointing. Were there twists? Yes but they were too far reached. A twist is unexpected not completely expected sprinkled with a too far fetched motive. The protagonist was moronic to say the least. The reasoning behind the motives were not “a-ha” moments for the listener, instead it was more like “seriously?” ((Insert eye roll)) I don’t say that to be hurtful, this is literally my response throughout the book. This writer is amazing and her work has made me an absolute fan but I regret wasting a credit on this read! The narrator did great, easy to listen to her. I will definitely continue reading McFadden novels but hope that this one was just a thorn amongst the roses of her work!

Buckhead isn’t a place you live, it’s a place you survive. And that applies even to the wealthy housewives that have it all. Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

…unpredictable twists but the writing in all of authors books I’ve read is very elementary and basic…”Karen said…then Olivia said…Karen said…Shannon replied…” idk it was difficult at times to stay focused on the story bc of the writing. I did enjoy the story though and I absolutely love Andi Arndt!
