Consider getting a different version. The original story is great, but this recording replaces chunks of narrative with arguments, grunts & fights... irritating at best.

Asides
Droll... The book was published in 1926 & the male narrator is stereotypically judgmental of women. Then he behaves the same way-- ex. manipulatively collecting gossip

Interesting to note the latest technology... ex. narrator's sister plans to borrow one of those new vacuum cleaners

I've heard 2 audiobook versions. This one is subtle & nuanced

I do like a good zombie story but didn't find one here. Most stories were ruined by bad writing, vocabulary limited & overloaded with 4 letter words, poor narration often with accents that miss the mark... Other stories are just boring.

An interesting story and a good mystery. Narrator is much better than the performer of books 1 & 2.

It's OK-- MHO, sound effects detract. There are interesting parts, but the stories didn't grab me.

Interesting, but incomplete. Even book one of a series should not be cut off with a hatchet

The author's asides & her commentary were distracting & often irritating. The occasional touch of gallows humor is part of the story, but by the boatload, it just gets in the way

The author captured the cultural mileu. I was intrigued by the many details of daily life, such as the origin of street lights. Several reviewers were put off by the number of story lines, but they were needed to show the depth of the picture. The contrast of the king's entourage, the populace & their interactions were integral to the story.

I've read a lot of Sanderson's books, but this one stands alone. His books are always well written and he's a great story teller, but the other books lack the depth and multi-layered structure of Elantris. The meaning goes well beyond the story-- I should say meanings because there is often more than one.

I doubt that anyone will ever see this review out of so many others, but Elantris is so rich-- I just had to say something!

Ian Esselmont has hit his stride both as a writer and a story teller. Dancer's Lament begins a rich development of Malazan history without coming across as a prequel. The relationships of the characters are unexpected and complex. The book stands on it's own without suggesting that the characters have a future in an epic series, so I believe it would be a great choice for someone who has never heard of Malazan Book of the Fallen. For those who have read and reread MBotF, what can I say... It's sweet.

The reader, John Banks, is just right. Great voices with just the right emphasis in the right places. My only complaint is the voice of Koroll. I found it difficult to listen to when he talked very long, which fortunately was not very often. Otherwise, excellent.
