Story
When Marshall McEwan left his hometown at age 18, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away ultimately spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington DC. But just as the political chaos in the nation’s capital lifts him to new heights, Marshall is forced to return home in spite of his boyhood vow. His father is dying, his mother is struggling to keep the family newspaper from failing, and the town is in the midst of an economic rebirth that might be built upon crimes that reach into the state capitol - and perhaps even to Washington.

I plan to listen to this again. Though the narrator’s voice was clearly that of a tiny woman, she masterfully portrayed each of the characters. The plot line is sooo possible, soo easy to fall into the story.

I've read 11 of 12 of the Sookie Stackhouse books and felt a huge chasm opening up....no more Sookie books! :( So in a chat with one of the Audible specialists, I found out about Phillippa Bornikova! The only problem is that there's only ONE book!! Please, please write more Linet Books!!

Would you listen to Out of the Black Land again? Why?
I did. I'd spent so much time with these characters that I wanted to experience them again.
What did you like best about this story?
I absolutely love that this book was such a long book. I enjoyed every rich detail and description, the entire building of this world, characters and lives was spell-binding.
What does Paul Garcia and Emily Bauer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I am so happy that there was both a male AND a female narrators....not just a male adjusting his voice to mimic that of a female and vice versa. It really made the story work!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would indeed!! These are characters who are entirely believable...though unique. Also, Harris has a great way of getting to the "meat" of each character and working with narrators who are able to sink into each persona.
What does Alyssa Bresnahan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She successfully brings each character to life in a way that just isn't possible when reading. I now identify Harper with this narrator in the same way that Johanna Parker IS Sookie Stackhouse.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I just about did!!

I was curious about this character as I am addicted to Sookie Stackhouse. Harris could never keep up with my unsatiable desire to read Sookie books! I thoroughly enjoyed my introduction to this new character, Harper, and her brother, Tolliver.
