Story
It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned; the out-of-work and the hungry are demanding change. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa, a large silent house now bereft of brothers, husband, and even servants, life is about to be transformed, as impoverished widow Mrs. Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers.

I feel sorry for the narrator having to read this aloud.

Slow, but interesting
Reviewed: 09-20-16
The story is slow, but interesting. The narrator speaks slowly, so I increased the speed to 1.25, and it was still very easy to listen to, and helped with the slow pace of the story.
There are many characters in the story, and it can be difficult to keep up with who is who, perhaps more difficult with an audiobook. Also, it takes a while to feel very sympathetic for the main character. Despite all this, by the end I feel curious as to what will come next in her and some of the other characters' lives, so I will likely listen to the next book at some point.

Wonder why....
Reviewed: 09-17-12
Would you try another book from Ann Patchett and/or Hope Davis?
I wonder why I did not enjoy this Ann Patchett book as much as Bel Canto? Bel Canto is a tough act to follow, as it is one of my favorites in recent years. I will likely try another Patchett title, but I would not seek out Hope Davis as a narrator.
If you’ve listened to books by Ann Patchett before, how does this one compare?
This is the first Patchett book that I've listened to; the others I've read as paperbacks.
What three words best describe Hope Davis’s voice?
I only have one word: Monotone.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
No.

Story
Lulu Sawyer arrives in Marrakech, Morocco, hoping to rekindle her romance with a worldly Englishman, Ian Drumm. It's the perfect cover for her assignment with the American CIA: tracing the flow of money from well-heeled donors to radical Islamic groups. As she navigates the complex interface of Islam and the West, Lulu stumbles into unforeseen intrigues. The more Lulu immerses herself in the workings of Marrakech, the more questions emerge; and when bombs explode, the danger is palpable.
