Although I do not share all the religious views of the author I did find this book very thought provoking and interesting.

Story
A belief in free will touches nearly everything that human beings value. It is difficult to think about law, politics, religion, public policy, intimate relationships, morality—as well as feelings of remorse or personal achievement—without first imagining that every person is the true source of his or her thoughts and actions. And yet the facts tell us that free will is an illusion.

Interesting Waste of Time

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Ok... I bought this book on the premise of some reviews praising the author for his insight and intelligence.
However, I found the arguments for the authors line of thinking to be failing in substance and content.
Interesting how the author compares seemingly meaningless acts such as muscle movement and other various body activity to moral decisions and actions as all being lumped into one grand idea of being at the mercy of the biological creature for every supposed decision we make.
Overall, I found this book to be very bankrupt in meaning or depth - however thought provoking!

Story
Virtually all human societies were once organized tribally, yet over time most developed new political institutions which included a central state that could keep the peace and uniform laws that applied to all citizens. Some went on to create governments that were accountable to their constituents. We take these institutions for granted, but they are absent or are unable to perform in many of today’s developing countries—with often disastrous consequences for the rest of the world.

If you could sum up The Origins of Political Order from Pre-human Times to the French Revolution in three words, what would they be?
Very interesting book. It is pretty much what I expected it to be. The overall rating for my review is based on the way the author captures and explains in an informative way the history and story of politics.
For me this helped solidify in my mind the historical elements of politics and why it is important to study history.
Funny how many of the ills of society could probably be avoided today if more people (especially our political leaders) would study history for its pitfalls and greatness!!

Is there anything you would change about this book?
This is definitely not the Vampire series in intensity I was expecting from Ann Rice.
Overall it was alright just not the depth I was hoping for!!
