I was sad when the book ended. I laughed, cried, was entertained and totally immersed in this outstanding story. There are no words to describe how talented this author is in story telling. Oprah could not have picked a better book.

I loved this book- I felt amusement, I laughed and cried, was appalled at the treatment of women, delighted in the successes and I was sad at the failures. This book had no lack of surprises. I marveled at the main character’s grit and determination to be herself- and also her satire. I highly recommend this book.

I am inspired by Liz Cheney’s courage and commitment to defending our constitution at great personal and political cost to her and her family. I am also committed to never having our former president hold any government office again. I have to believe that whatever is true and right will prevail. I HAVE to believe that.

What I was thinking towards the end of the book was the blessing Delia received in not experiencing her hell and back during COVID. Loved every sentence of this book.

It sounded like a teenage novel
Reviewed: 08-15-23
I visited Dachau in 2019. At the time, I couldn’t understand how the citizens of Dachau could allow the inhumanity go on. Although I had come to the conclusion that the non Jews would have had little power to change things and the only power would have been military, this book gave me the non Jew perspective. I wasn’t aware that the SS hid in plain sight.
The narrator made it feel like I was listening to a teenage novel. The impressions of the different characters left much to be desired- or not try at all. Because of the story, I kept with it but I wanted to stop multiple times and just read the book.

Story
After President Woodrow Wilson suffered a paralyzing stroke in the fall of 1919, his wife, First Lady Edith Wilson, began to handle the day-to-day responsibilities of the chief executive. Mrs. Wilson had had little formal education and had only been married to President Wilson for four years, yet in the tenuous peace following the end of World War I, she dedicated herself to managing the office of the president, reading all correspondence intended for her bedridden husband.

Sorry, not impressed
Reviewed: 06-07-23
I found this book maddening. A president, an elected official by the people has a requirement to put the people of the country first. Male or female, that is what a trusted servant or “steward” does. That is not what happened in President Wilson’s administration. When he became incapacitated, the decision is not “he will die if he leaves the presidency”, but what is right for the country? First woman president? Please! She had no business taking over anything and I believe it was selfish and arrogant, not to mention dangerous to do so. And to enable these actions and deceive the people who trusted him and by the cabinet and other elected officials is criminal. There is no doubt Edith loved her husband but that live was sadly misdirected. Jill Biden who definitely loves her husband and is infinitely more qualified than Edith to “run” a country would not be allowed nor would she attempt to take over in Joe’s illness. This book is a very revealing blight on our history.

With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

I’m happy I didn’t read the reviews first
Reviewed: 04-14-23
My mother had 8 siblings. It was messy, complicated and fractured but they loved each other in their weird way. I loved “Hello Beautiful”. I think William’s depression was poignant and hopeful. It described the things we tell ourselves to drive us to hopelessness only to realize that love from those around us can bring us to a new, authentic life. We are only sick as our secrets is the mantra of the sisters and William’s life. I loved listening to how the sisters and William became aware of their behavior and learned from it to “do better”. To me, this book was an expression of how life is messy and hard but the power of authentic love can bring us to a new understanding if we choose to do the work. I disagree with the negative reviews. This book taught me something.

What is the hype all about?
Reviewed: 02-14-23
I chose this book because of what appeared credible statements of anticipation and of Salman Rushdie. As I proceeded into the book, I realized I had made a mistake. This is not a book that would interest me but since I had purchased it, continued to listen the fantastical story. I found it hard to follow the story line and the myriad of characters. As I continued on, I felt I finally “got it”. Although I wouldn’t recommend the book , I feel that my interests just lie elsewhere. The reader was perfect for the story.

Raised Eyebrows is the bittersweet story of the last years in the life of Groucho Marx, told by a young Marx Brothers fan who was fortunate enough to work for Groucho as his personal secretary and archivist, right inside Marx's Beverly Hills home. In addition to getting to know his hero, the author was able to spend quality time with Zeppo, Gummo, Mae West, George Burns, Bob Hope, Jack Lemmon, SJ Perelman, Steve Allen, and scores of other luminaries of stage, screen, TV, and literature.

Interesting read on a beloved actor
Reviewed: 02-09-23
I experienced a wide range of emotions listening to this book. It was interesting and sad. I also felt anger. Angry at the staff for being complicit in allowing the years of elder abuse to continue. How different Groucho’s later years could have been had someone reported the abuse. Groucho deserved so much more than what he rec’d. Having said that, Steve Stoliar was fantastic as the voice of the old Hollywood stars. Brought back so many memories.
