Story
Sorry... Really? Thrust? Anyway, Danny Kendrick was a down-on-his luck performer who always struggled to find his place. He certainly never wanted to be a hero. He just hoped to earn a living doing what he loved. That all changes when he pisses off the wrong guy and gets sucked into a fantasy realm straight out of a Renaissance Fair. Getting used to a new world is tough. It's even tougher when you're surrounded by axe-wielding barbarians, super hot elf assassins, strange magic, and a jaded System that doesn't appear interested in being charged with yet another companion.

The MC was just too toxic
Reviewed: 11-08-24
I understand that we're probably supposed to hate the MC, but it was a bit much. I can't enjoy reading about assholes, and between him and Screenie, with the extra bite added by Jeff Hays, it was honestly way too much.
I kept listening only because of the music - I thought that was a great touch.
The pace was solid, and the characters did pick up towards the end, but I still won't be continuing with this series.

Don't bother if you have other books
Reviewed: 08-18-24
If you have Jackson's other books, you probably already have the "romantic language" and "describing people" bonus episodes. The bulk of this text is the useful phrases book, and it's literally just random phrases and words in Spanish, sorted by theme, with no translation or space to practice. I don't get the point of it.

Yes, I know you would never use profanity when speaking Spanish. But maybe you would still like to know and understand what's being said in Spanish if someone calls you a #*@!$ in Spanish or a *#*@! in Spanish. Or maybe you're interested in accelerated Spanish and you're looking for some colorful language to be able to express yourself. Then here's your chance to get on the road to accelerated Spanish and learn plenty of swear words or curse words in Spanish.

Incredibly aggressive
Reviewed: 08-18-24
This book is basically somebody saying something very aggressively in English, and then giving a Spanish equivalent. While I agree it's important to understand swearing in languages you're studying (and I swear a lot in English) this was too hard to listen to.
There's no context given for the words (so 'fool' in English is translated as multiple things in Spanish), and while there's lots of regional swearing represented, Spain itself isn't one of them (ie less helpful for me).
I've bought a bunch of Jackson's books over the years and enjoy the call-and-response method for learning, but that was absent here. It really is just a narrator yelling at you and then hearing the Spanish version.
Pass.

Reviewed: 08-18-24
I'd previously read this in English, some 10 years ago, and decided to listen in Spanish having just finished B2. Zero comprehension issues - the narrator is very clear (though hilariously, abruptly clears his throat in the second-last chapter).

Story
Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate; she works an easy job at a hip art gallery and lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

Deadpan narration of biting satire
Reviewed: 02-17-24
I completely understand why people wouldn't like this book, but I loved it. It was darkly hilarious, at times relatable, at times horrific. It felt very 'millennial woman meets Fear and Loathing', embedded in trauma and satirical social commentary. It made me think, and it made me feel a lot of things. 10/10 deadpan audiobook narration, too.

Agent Isaac Steele has problems. He spends all his splibs on drink and drugs. He has some deep-seated and very much unresolved issues with his parents. And his robotic partner at Greatest Britain’s Department of Clarification, Dr Timothy Stephens, is ruled more by his heart than his hard drive. But all these issues take a back seat when Isaac stumbles upon a case involving the most sensitive information in the cosmos - a Never File, inaccessible to all except those with the highest clearance. He is expressly forbidden to involve himself. So naturally he does.

Absolutely outstanding

The wittiest writing I've encountered in years, and the narration (by the author, an actor) is a delight. I listened to it while hiking, and was snort-laughing to myself on the trail like a lunatic. An immense pleasure, and I wouldn't make this comparison lightly, but a worthy successor to Douglas Adams. GIVE ME MORE

Story
Christmas is the single biggest annual event on the planet, a time for merry-making, over-indulgence, peace, goodwill, and the occasional family row. It’s as comfortable and familiar as a pair of old shoes and yet still glittery and exciting. But what do you really know about it? It’s stuffed full of traditions and rituals that most of us have been observing all our lives without having the slightest idea of where they come from.

I hate Bryson's narration so much, that it rendered the book tedious and irritating. Definitely not a mistake I'll make again!
Also, he seems to have missed the whole discourse about the 12 gifts of Christmas ALL being birds.
