Lovely cozy mystery with a slow build romance and fantasy elements.

Loved the slow build of the fantasy world and the romance. Found Willy’s voice to be annoying, but also disliked her character immensely 😅 I have not read the series about India Glass and was not confused about the storyline of this book.

Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Overhyped

The narrator clearly is fighting a cold. Listening to her narrate is like watching a Mucinex commercial that lasts for 15+ hours.
This book is barely fantasy. It’s full of cliches and redundant dialogue. We get it. The main character is frail. She’s becoming a rider against all odds. How many people do we need to hear it from in one chapter??? She’s supposed to be smart, she wanted to be a scribe after all. How can she go from fearing her own demise in a few seconds to noticing the incredible physique of a guy standing off in the distance? This isn’t even well done romance. This is amateurish romance with a dash of dragons as side characters. Waste of time and overhyped on social media.
